I figured we need a thread of handy gadgets that actually work.

Here's one: If you use a lot of garlic in your cooking, you have to get the silicone garlic peeler. It's only 3 or so bucks at the prime outlet mall in morrisville, and it does the job pretty well:

You just put the cloves in, roll it in a few seconds, and the peels all come off.

I enjoy cooking too much to rely on "gadgets"

I second that. I use my Magic Bullet just about every day.

Lee Harvey Oswald can vouch for the Magic Bullet too. Its a killer gadget.

I bought one of those garlic peelers and used it for like a week... takes longer to dig it out of the drawer and clean it out than it does to smack the clove with the side of my big ol' chef's knife (10").

One of the best purchases I ever made was a $1 plastic bowl scraper from Williams-Sonoma. Its a thin white piece of flexible plastic that is flat on one side and curved for a bowl on the other. Makes scraping up garlic and onions off the cutting board so much easier (and keeps me from using my knife).

I HIGHLY recommend the pepper mill below. While the name sounds more like a massive dildo (The Unicorn Magnum Plus, Black and 9"), it cranks out some serious pepper (a single turn is equivalent to about 4 turns on a regular mill) and the grind is even.

I also like these plunger measuring cups because they make getting stuff like butter and peanut butter so much easier to get out.

A silpat is pretty damn handy too.

those plunger measuring cups are awesome. my brother has one at home, good stuff.

i've wondered if that magic bullet was any good. i looked into getting one when i was looking for a small chopper/processor. but it was $60ish, too much for me atm.

Damn it I can never find those things.

I have a massive food processor and it's definitely worth it. I make a lot of pastry and dough with it.
