I get this error everytime I try to run Linux on Virtual PC. I have tried searching, but have been unable to find the cause/cure of the problem. Anyone else have experience with this?I really need to use Linux on a VM, and VMware is out of the question as I don't wanna buy it.

- Try VMWare and see if the problem reproduces itself.- Try VirtualPC on another machine.- Try Googling some more ... I'm getting a ton of results for "linux soft lockup" ... need more specifics on what you are doing / os / kernel / etc. to narrow it down.

I don't have access to another machine I could use to fuck around with.Well, I am just trying to run a Linux install, and it halts after giving me the aforementioned message. I have had this happen with almost every distro out there, which means it's something with the kernel. could it be possible that Intel has some kind of a "software lock" in processors that stops them from using Linux if Dell sold them?

A lot of Dell computers badged with Win XP have been loaded with Red Hat at NCSU, so I don't think that is the problem

ok I tried VMWare server RC2 and it worked...but the thing is having issues finding a hard drive now.So I am sticking with Windows Server and Virtual PC.Linux sucks
