There is a trend of free beagles on craigslist: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/zip/

So if anyone has been looking, might want to check there.

That's because beagles are obnoxious dogs.

I used to have one

it barked and howled and barked and howled.... it never stopped

then one day it chased a rabbit off into the sunset, and we never saw it again

that's funny this is posted b/c last night i was at my friend's apartment complex and a guy was walking his beagle puppy, white with brown and black spots...

i did some research on them and they seem like cool dogs.

When I am ready to get a dog, it will be between a beagle and a miniature pinscher.

i liked my beagle, but she:
-ate everything
-barked at everything
-didnt listen to a word anyone said

they are loving dogs, but are relatively hard to train.

I hated our beagle.
That little fucker would be taken on a walk for 15-20 minutes, not go to the bathroom once, then shit all over the carpet as soon as we came back inside. And he ate his own shit. And bit my bulldog's ears. Fucking snooty little AKC papered dog.

I also thought this was about bagels.

That's what ours did too. Except we helped her on her road into the sunset by giving her to a farmer.

the reasons everyone is listing for why they don't like beagles is b/c ignorant people buy them without realizing what beagles are bred to do. If you don't understand that then you can't appreciate the breed.

Beagles are great dogs, but first and foremost they're hunting dogs. Yeah, they bark and chase all kinds of things (not to mention dragging dead things into the house on occassion), because that's what they've been bred to do. If you give them enough exercise, they calm down.

not really. the problem is that they are so goddamn hard to train. i could live with the barking and the occassional runaway if she didnt eat everything, shit on the floor, dig up the fence, etc. i dont hate any of my old or current pets, but you gotta realize when some are significantly better behaved than others.

i dont wanna beat my dog like shiloh to get it to do what i want.

You are right that beagles are more difficult to train but no dog should have to be beat to be trained. If you set the correct rules, boundaries, and limitations and become the alpha member of the pack (without physical force, it is a mental thing) then you can easily train a dog. The actions you described (shitting on the floor, constant barking, eating things, running away) are all signs of a dog that is ruling the house b/c they lack a human being the dominant member of the pack. It is also signs of a dog that needs an outlet for their energy. it is basic dog psychology.

when i say they are more difficult to train, i mean compared to herding dogs or working dogs. beagles are bred to follow their nose but they are def. trainable.

I had a beagle, and he would runaway occasionally after a rabbit or something. Granted it was difficult to get him to come back after he was on the hunt for a furry meal.

My parents have a Beagle, generally a little bastard if he's not taken on a walk or entertained regularly.

I had a beagle (she was spayed) that ran away and we searched US-1 and the roads assuming the worst after the third day.

8 days later, that little bitch was on our back porch, covered in ticks, waiting for her treat.

Let us not forget that Snoopy was a beagle and was far from useless, even attaining the rank of Beagle Scout.

I agree. most people are ignorant to the breed they buy, as well as, being ignorant on dog behavior, expense, etc. being ignorant is not a bad thing and not meant to be an insult. They just didn't know what they were getting into. If you realize the ignorance and do something positive about it then that is great! if not, the dog ends up at a shelter or rescue.

to note, my sister is very into dogs and we read up on training, even took her to obedience school. it didnt work. we've had multiple dogs since then and only 1 of the other 5-6 has been anywhere near as "bad."

beagles aren't very smart dogs. they are more nose than brain. they definitely need a lot of excercise or they'll become neurotic.
