The only thing worse than Greatest Hits CD's are the ones with one/two new songs on them.Discuss*the only acceptable ones are from artists whose albums are hard to find. i.e. artists from before 1970.

tell me if the eagles' greatest hits is for uncultured fans.
7/2/2006 3:17:55 PM
I respectfully disagree for the most part. A lot of the time Greatest Hits cd's have all singles and popular songs, which are not always the best songs. But for some artists they work.
7/2/2006 3:20:29 PM
^ sometimes theyre the only cd's worth buying, taking the good songs and making it worth the $15+, if you buy, instead of buying 3 or 4 mediocre cd's for the 5 songs that you actually like

Buzzcocks' "Singles Going Steady" is better than any of their albums.

I really dont have a problem with greatest hits cds, however, there should be one rule: The band most either be broken up or most of the key members of the band are gone.
7/2/2006 3:49:46 PM
Yeah, it definitely depends on the artist. For example, I bought a "best-of" CD of Daniel Johnston's music, and I would bet my life it's better (and a lot cheaper) than trying to wade through his entire catalogue (much of which is hard to find) and try to find the best material. If you're using it as an introduction to a somewhat obscure artist with a huge, intimidating catalogue, I don't think it's such a bad idea.

i have a rule about buying cdsi have to like at least 2 or 3 of the songs on the album before buying itwhen that happens i usually like some of the other songsif i buy an album with only one song i've heard of, I generally don't like the rest of the cd and i've just wasted my moneygreatest hit albums usually fall into the 1st category for me

I hate it when "artists" who have only released two or three albums release greatest hits albums. I think you need to have at least 5 albums before even considering a greatest hits album.
7/3/2006 2:47:21 AM
I always said that if I was ever in a band, our debut album would be titled "Greatest Hits"
7/3/2006 9:02:54 AM
what's a suck douche?
7/3/2006 12:10:17 PM
What about the Beatles?I mean, they have a 2 CD album composed entirely of number 1 hits
7/3/2006 12:24:33 PM
They're good if you know absolutely nothing about the group and want a catchall experience initially. And that's about it.
7/3/2006 12:32:07 PM
It's good if a band has like 7 CDs but there are only 2-3 good tracks on each.
7/3/2006 12:41:30 PM
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the internet has rendered greatest hits CDs irrelevant.
7/3/2006 12:41:39 PM
Good for casual fans.Example: I like Lynyrd Skynyrd, but I'm not a huge fan. So I own the Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd double album.

the songs on the greatest hits are the played out ones...i say it is only ok to get the greatest hits of the eagles (as mentioned before) and blue oyster cult and stuff like that[Edited on July 5, 2006 at 11:29 PM. Reason : .]

i dont want to have to buy 2 different Cher albums to hear "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" AND "Jesse James"buying the greatest hits sacrifices enough of my heterosexuality as it is.

i'll take music snobs for 2000 alex
7/6/2006 12:08:58 AM
I figure that with some artists it might be better than wading through the entire catalogue. Michael Jackson comes to mind.
