I'm trying to plan a weekend getaway within NC and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I'd like to go to the mountains and stay 1-2 nights at a cabin or B&B and be able to fish and canoe nearby.

I heard that Hanging Rock was a cool place, but are there any other good towns in the mountain region?

Blowing Rock, theres a place there you can stay that has individual log cabins, with a room or so and a bathroom

linville, black mountain, steels creek, blowing rock, wilsons creek, price lake, cherokee, harper creek, and south mountain are some of my favorite fishing/camping spots. And asheville, just b/c it's asheville.

I went through Gatlinburg last week on a family vacation through Tennessee. The whole city is a giant tourist trap.

gatlinburg = the redneck disney

i like Lake Lure too - but it's low elevation "mountains."

Asheville is the best mountain town for entertainment and beauty - lots of pubs, bars, great live music and dining. But again, low (~1300 ft) elevation, so it's more of a mountain pass than a mountain...

I really like Ashe county, up near the New River state park, but it's hard to find places to stay there, it's so rural. very beautiful, and only about 30 minutes drive to boone.... 3000+ elev too, so its nice and cool

i hate lake lure, go there if you want noise violations for your car or motorcycle at the drop of a hat and want to be harrassed by the cops all the time. Its all stuck up yankees there.

I just got back from Black Mountain, and I can recommend the Bella Luna Inn. http://www.bellalunainn.com

I was there for work, so I didn't get to explore much of the area, but I'm sure there are plenty of outdoor activities around. Downtown Black Mountain was reallly cute with lots of shops and restaurants, I enjoyed the Black Mountain Bistro. Also, it's not far from Asheville.

Its not the Myrtle Beach strip, we have a house at Lake Lure and its great for exactly all the reasons you hate it

hanging rock isn't really a big mountain so the temperature and humidty isn't any different from winston-salem.
Banner elk is my favorite mountain town. I think they have zoning laws that prohibit big businesses and chain restaurants so everything is has a small mountain town feel to it.

yea my brother went to Lees-McRae and he said there is only one place that delivers and there are only like 2 bars. So if you are looking for a mountain town with more of a night life boone is a good choice but there is alot more wilderness oriented activites in banner elk.

I lived in Montreat for a summer. Black Mountain is super cute and 20 minutes from Asheville. I have eaten at the Red Rocker Inn (FABULOUS) and recommend it highly. A lot of people stay there as well

I think there was an inexpensive place called the montavista inn. Its kinda cheesy, but there is a bar and its clean.

Black Mountain has great little shops, quick access to hiking, and you could swim at the Montreat Pool for $3 or so. My Father's Pizza has been visited by Ben Affleck and The Town Pump usually has music and good drinks.

Ok, so I think I'm going with Black Mountain. I'll definitely look into the shops, and more importantly if there are any trails/waterfalls/lakes nearby. Thanks!

If money is not an issue, Blowing Rock is easily the best. Food is great here at Ichibans (Spelling Maybe?) Vinters, Knights on Main, Cheesburgers in Paradise, or at Outback.

Banner Elk is about the same and will cost almost as much. Banner Elk has the best ski resorts in Sugar and Beech and the Elk River Falls are beautiful and not many people know about them. You can hike/picnic/whatever at Grandfather.

BTW Golf courses in this area are the best in NC: 1) Grandfather 2) Linville 3) Linville Ridge 4) Hound Ears 5) Boone CC 6) Blowing Rock 7) Elk River

Hey Katie,

Its Jenni from BME

If you go to the mtns I def. recommend Blowing Rock as a mtn girl. A really good b&b up there is the Mast Farm Inn which is in Valle Crucis outside of Boone (not a bad drive to boone or blowing rock). Valle Crucis is really cute- basically a pretty valley with the Mast General Store. Neat place. Dinner rec for Blowing Rock- The Speckled Trout Cafe. Their stuffed rainbow trout is amazing- Paul Newman flies in on his plane for it!

Hey,

Been doing well, you? I haven't stayed at Mast Farm Inn before but I have heard it is really nice. I used to go to camp in Valle Crucis when I lived in TX and always thought it'd be a pretty place for a wedding!

Ok, so I'm trying to plan this trip for my bf's 21st bday (it'll be a few days after, so he can party right at home).

I want to take him to a fancy bar before a fancy dinner, and would love for it to be like on a mainstreet or something. I found a really cute cabin in that aquone town that has a pool table in it, so I'm really interested in that, but I didn't realize there were so many options in the mountains!

Am I doing too much planning? Honestly, it's his birthday so I don't know what'd be good for him. It was his idea to go on the trip, but does anyone have any suggestions on things to do? What do you like to do when you go to the mountains?

thanks you guys!
