Can anyone explain to me y it wouldnt work? it seems like the two coolants are very similair.

its not compatible with the seals, hoses, etc.

I highly recommend that you don't mix.

you can upgrade to r134 very easily though

The biggest issue is that the two refrigerants are not very miscible in each other or each other's oils.

R134 and mineral oil do not mix.

R12 and PAG (poly alkylene glycol) oil do not mix.

Also, many of the older seal materials are well-suited for use with R12 and mineral oil, but can very quickly degrade when used with R134 and PAG. One example is Viton, which will NOT hold up when subjected to R134/PAG. Some of the older compressors such as Panasonics or Keihins have Viton seals.

Some compressors simply can't take the extra load from the correspondingly higher high-side pressures. We all know of the shitpile Ford FX15 (if you can still find one that works) or the radial Harrison compressors (the flat one).

And the newer systems use a different dessicant in the accumulator/receiver-drier that's compatible with R134 (the old ones aren't).
