Okay, I don't know how I missed this, but the sequel to The Longest Journey has been out for a couple of months. Just picked it up yesterday and I've been playing through it. Incredibly detailed environments, and the story's pretty good. Gameplay doesn't seem as deep as the original, though--it feels more like an interactive movie than a traditional graphic adventure.
