make CP&L's(Progress) and Puke Powers look good?

I never worked transmission. I was always at a plant. I was more concerned about making it than making sure it gets where it needs to go

sure we're having a storm here, but jesus there i can look out over most of downtown and south/southeast atlanta and see/hear transformers and transmission lines blowing up and switching off

the UPS's here in my condo are working overtime and are clicking and beeping like mad

i shouldn't say anything bad since georgia power is my employer, but goddamn they need to do something. this shit is awful

Hahaha, are you used to n.c, already. Yah, this is why I hate cities, it's a paragon of selfless greed.

ah. See I knew you were a Power guy so I figured you were talking about the actually system by looking at the layouts and crap.

I just figured you worked for Southern Company

[Edited on June 24, 2006 at 10:56 PM. Reason : damn you do work for them. lol]

i dont do anything really with actual layout of the system or really anything with transmission/distribution. just doing research on next-generation switches and power system devices and controllers

stuff that will hopefully make the overall grid more reliable and stable

gotcha. You like doing that?

I loved working in the plants. yeah they were hot and dirty but knowing you were responsible for keeping a few thousand people's lights on left me with a feeling of accomplishment.

Puke Power was starting the merger with Cinergy when I graduated so I was never offered a full time position. Now I'm working in control valves.

yea it's pretty cool. im doing the research for GP as part of some big work/study symposium between universities and energy companies. so im not only getting paid from GP, I'm also getting my graduate degree

I'm about to switch from NCSU to Georgia Tech though, but nothing will change except from whom I will receive my degree. ncsu got dropped from the program, so I was SOL for a while until I got an offer to go to georgia tech

I already wrote like 50 pages of crap for my dissertation, i hope to god i wont have to rewrite any of that shit when i get transferred

NCSU gets dropped from a Power study? I wonder why that is? Is it b/c the only power teacher we have is semi-retired and there isn't another teacher that could hold a candle to the coolest Irish teacher I've had?

I'm not involved with the bureaucracy and politics as to why they got dropped, but I suspect that it's because there is no decent power program at NCSU. I'm doing power, but I'm officially part of the controls group and power electronics group. And I don't think NCSU was able to find the appropriate funding to remain a member of the symposium.

But GaTech has a lot more research money than NCSU, and they have a huge power program in the EE dept. I think the power group was ranked #2 or #3 in the nation, and they're real tight with georgia power.

and yea, grainger is the coolest teacher ive ever had.

I feel I'm with you as one of the few that took power classes at NCSU. I took all that the undergrad had to offer. 305 and 451. I think thats it. If there was somethign else I didn't know about it or it wasn't taught by grainger. I just got lucky to get 451 with him.

Never offered. Never Could get enough people to sign up.

I had to take 451 my final semester b/c it was one of the few semesters that Grainger decided to teach. Glad I did. That was a great GPA booster glass

451 was a pretty good class, but we spent waaaay too much time on the mechanics of power system convergence (all the newton-rhapson stuff and senseless numbercrunching). that stuff is so outdated now, and it hasn't been used in a long time.

yeah that is true. It's still one of my favorite ECE classes ever. 305 wasn't that great atleast for me

I really got pissed of with State after I decided to take power classes that none of them were offered

yea, graingers classes were among my favorites in EE. but i agree that they should offer more power-related classes. sure they have power electronic circuits and controls, but it's just not the same

I can get you a Southern Company tshirt, but I don't think it would be as cool as if you had a Duke Power one

there's one on eBay for Duke Energy, but that's not quite as cool, either.

yeah most of them are going to be duke energy shirts now. the name Duke Power went way when they expanded with a gas pipeline.

I have a ton of shirts but I think they are all duke energy. I'm pretty sure dad has some old Duke Power shirts

Yupp, pretty much every storm we lost power. That's why you move to the 'burbs and get underground utilities.

Yes! My power has gone off at least once a day in the past month. I think the surges are making my bill jump
