I have to switch planes to go to Germany and I'm paranoid about my luggage being broken into/lost. I want to do carry-ons. Does anyone know the limit in size/weight for carry-ons when flying?

You will not be able to pack for an overseas trip with only carry ons. Limits are the smallest roller bag in a collection and something that can fit under your seat. If you can carry it and stow it you can carry it on...just remember though, you endanger everyone on the flight with a really heavy carry on...if there is a problem and one of the overhead compartments pops open, your 50 lbs. bag becomes a 50 lbs. battering ram. It's suggested that you keep carry on's light with just the essentials. On an overseas trip, pack your doc kit (toiletries) and a change of clothes in the carry on...and electronic items (cameras, computers, etc.).

The size weight limit for carryons can be found on the airline websites, as well as their luggage limits for both domestic and overseas (which ARE different for most airlines).^ and ditto to what he said. There's no reason to even try this, you'll never manage it unless you're going to germany for all of 1 day, which I doubt.

If you're used to packing for long trips you can easily go 5 days with a standard carry-on size piece of luggage, and most hotels (even small family run ones in Germany) have laundry service available... so it is possible to travel internationally using carry-on only. I have done this many times. That said - all airlines have different carry on size standards, but they're generally 22 x 14 x 9.[Edited on June 24, 2006 at 12:18 PM. Reason : asdf]

I have never had a problem flying international with checking luggage. You can purchase locks approved by TSA or something for travel.

I've never met anyone whose luggage was broken into or absolutely lost. I do know people whose luggage has been delayed by a couple of days.In your carry on, pack a change of clothes, some fresh underwear, the essential toiletries, all prescription meds/jewelry/electronics, and don't worry about the rest. It will get there. And in fact, you don't have to pack a lot of toiletries - Pantene shampoos and conditioners, deodorant, and all that good stuff is actually available over there. Remember, you have to be able to manage your way through airports with your carry on when you change planes. And if you're the person who hogs all the carry-on space in the overhead bin, other passengers will not like you (which sucks on an 8 hour flight). If your carry-ons are too large or you're one of the last on the plane, they will stick your carry-on under the plane anyway and give it back to you at the gate when you arrive at your destination. Don't freak out - it's normal on small planes and you will get it back. This is a key reason, though, to carry the absolute essentials in a small, soft, squeezable bag so you can make it fit.How long are you going to be gone for?[Edited on June 25, 2006 at 9:26 AM. I'm only gone for a week and I'm not bringing any toiletries (my fiance is over there and I'm staying in his apartment). This is my first time flying and I'm nervous as hell.

You won't need that luggage once the plane crashes anyways

I would at least take a moisturizer, face wash, and maybe a tooth brush on the plane. The air gets really dry and you will feel miserable after a while.

anybody know the regulations regarding taking a guitar as a carry on? wouldn't want it thrown around, which is inevitable if you check anything.
6/25/2006 8:29:17 PM
leave the guitar at home

You can't take a guitar for carryon bc it is not small enough to fit in the compartments, it would have to be checked. and personally there is no way in hell I could pack for 5 days in a carryon, I can barely pack for 5 days in a suitcase. Sheesh. I hate for you that your first flight is overseas, does it start at night? That would be best for me so I could sleep. I personall fall asleep these days before the plane leaves the runway anyway. Good luck though!
