have any of you heard about this before? when my beagle gets excited, she starts these "backward sneeze" fits that last about a good minute or so. she's almost 2 and has had these fits ever since she was a puppy.
6/21/2006 2:01:46 PM
yeah. it is also called a "reversed sneeze". My foster dog does it and his body goes stiff. it usually lasts 45 seconds to a minute
6/21/2006 2:02:58 PM
wtf is a backwards sneezemy dog and my former dog both sneezed when excited but I thought it was just normal sneezing
6/21/2006 2:03:58 PM
Why the fuck did you wait 2 years to look into this?
6/21/2006 2:04:48 PM
It's fairly normal from what I understand. Mine do it occasionally.
6/21/2006 2:05:56 PM
^^ when did i ever say i waited 2 years to look at this? first time it happened, i asked the vet. that was over a year and a half ago, and he said it was normal. i thought they would subside as she got older, but they haven't.

I've been told that it comes from allergies... and it seems that my dog only does it when it's allergy season
6/21/2006 2:11:32 PM
Dachshund does it all the time. The vet said its normal.
6/21/2006 2:12:28 PM
is this like a dry-heaving type thing? My dog does some motion sometimes when she's excited..It looks sorta like a dry heavy and it sounds like she is choking, but she'snot and it only last for about 20 seconds or so if that.
6/21/2006 2:22:37 PM
^ yeah. she usually does it when she sees new people and starts sniffing them. just have to calm her down before she stops, but it takes a good minute or so.
6/21/2006 2:25:13 PM
mine does it after she goes into her barking rages too
6/21/2006 2:27:07 PM
yea its normal, my beagle did that all the time after he got all excited.
6/21/2006 3:09:37 PM
My dogs do it a lot in the fall and spring....it's allergies. The vet said it was sorta like when our throats get scratchy from allergies.[Edited on June 21, 2006 at 3:47 PM. Reason : .]
6/21/2006 3:19:13 PM
hmmmm...i think sabrina does this from time to time but it never startled me to have it checked out...now i know what it is!

our 7 year old bichon sneezes a bunch when he gets excited, never seemed like a problem... some dogs jump or bark when they're excited, ours sneezes.
6/21/2006 4:07:12 PM
wow my lhasa did that all her life and we never knew what it was...we tried to explain it to the vet, but i dont think he ever understood what we were talking about...nice to finally know what it was
6/21/2006 4:17:53 PM
My dog does it w/allergies so we give him childrens benadryl he also does it when excited, so I have no idea.
6/21/2006 4:29:22 PM
Mine does it, but I thought it was some early signs of heartworms.
6/21/2006 4:33:14 PM
My dog takes heart worm meds, I don't think thats it.
6/21/2006 4:35:20 PM
thats somewhat of a relief then.
6/21/2006 4:36:08 PM
well, my dog also sneezes normally... do your dogs sneeze "backwards" and the normal way?
6/21/2006 4:39:24 PM
oh, so that's what she's doing...hm
6/21/2006 6:07:14 PM
my beagle had it. vet said it was post nasal drip. if you put ur hand over their nose while they do it it generally makes um stop quicker.
6/21/2006 6:16:02 PM
^^^Yeah she does sneeze normally too.^I just rub her back and she quits.
6/21/2006 6:51:49 PM
my dads keeshond "sneezes" when she gets excited. it is a breed characteristic, called blustering.http://www.petsonthenet.co.nz/bidkeeshond.htm
6/21/2006 7:31:45 PM
my vet said it was related to getting excited/pulling on the leash. She said the "sneezing" was the result of the throat constricting slightly
6/22/2006 2:14:55 PM
My dog that does it don't use a leash. Where my parents live, they run free. She has a collar, but its not too tight.
6/22/2006 6:28:23 PM
Whenever my dog gets excited and tries to play bite, he sneezes. It's the cutest fucking thing.
