This isn't something I'm dealing with personally, but I am helping someone else with. What are solid grounds for grievances, as far as discrimination against foreign students in an academic setting, as opposed to "technically grounds, but it's shaky so it'd likely be a waste of time" grounds? We're talking passive-aggressive shit that falls into a grey area, some outright discriminatory things having been said, and bullying by an instructor. Is there someone in the English department who deals with ethical stuff like this? I know the student is getting the run-around in Lifelong Ed, and I know why, so I'm trying to help her with that, and we may go visit OIS together, but right now, I'm trying to get all the names, dates, and details of what's been going on.I also wonder if the instructor has already spoken to whomever we need to deal with, which is part of why I'd like to know the name.[Edited on June 20, 2006 at 1:39 PM. Start by talking with an advisor and get the opinion of someone affiliated with the university. Also, read through both the student and employee handbooks. They're both on the NCSU website and a simple search will help you find them. Do those two things and you should know what you need to in order to take the next steps.

You need to post exactly what's wrong...and then talk to the OIS director or a Dean.Things happen, and not everyone is wise/learned. I once had a professor compare me to a terrorist in front of some other people. It's only as bad as you make it to be.

^I'm not posting what's going on...if it were my situation, I'd be ok doing this, but it's not. And no, her adviser isn't helping AT ALL. I'm actually going to have to get mine to help me with this.

If she's a graduate student, I would say that the graduate school at NCSU has the best people I have ever seen in any University. The OIS is very helpfull as well, but they are usually swamped with work because of shortage of staff. But you have to pick your battles wisely. Sometimes the only right way is to lose. Besides, being a foreigner automatically excludes your friends from a lot of rights.

Thank you, maam. That'll save me some timeBecause I've gotten so many emails with "adviser" from my advisor and seen it from so many other folks in the college, I just assumed I was incorrect in thinking it was advisor. Google wasn't ever conclusive, since adviser and advisor are both applicable ^Nope, not yet. This is a battle worth fighting. I wouldn't be doing someone else's job if it weren't.[Edited on June 20, 2006 at 1:51 PM. Reason : ljaslkjas]

Get a lawyer, have them write a letter.

^^ Also, you're apparently a terrorist.

adviser or advisor are both acceptable.
