what type of file a video is?

I have an AVI that doesn't play in VLC, Mplayer, WMP, or Quicktime (with 3ivx, divx codecs). I'm pretty sure it's a worthless file, but I remember some people here talking about some app that can identify what type of movie a movie file is.

So, was I hallucinating, or does such a program exist?

I've tried various file extensions, i've tried treating it as a zip file and a rar file.

It was supposedly a copy of the movie "Thank you for smoking" btw...

use a hex editor, look at the header.
