I have a large blue topaz stone that i have had for a long time and i am wanting to have it set into a piece of jewelry. preferably a necklace. Can your run of the mill Reeds', Zales etc. do it for me or do any of you guys have other recommendations of artisans or other makers?

Well, there is a place here in Southpoint called Imposters on the second floor right outside of Nordie's. I want to say they make a lot of custom made stuff there, as well as a lot of fakes of celebrity jewelry (wedding bands, etc.)
Try some place on Franklin St.

My engagement ring was custom made at Jared's in Cary and we received impecable service.

Because she could no longer wear it due to arthritis, my grandmother gave my husband the ring that my grandfather gave her to mark their 10th Christmas together to have an engagement ring made for me. The original setting had 3 large diamonds surrounded by numerous smaller diamonds. The 3 large diamonds were pulled from the ring and a second ring created for me. The sales people took a great deal of care of my grandmother's antique setting and had some wonderful ideas for what we could do with the original ring. In fact, we will probably follow through on some of their ideas this Christmas and return my grandmother's ring as a necklace that she can wear. They also created a beautiful engagement ring that has phenomenal sentimental value for me.

Jared's in Cary has been our jeweler of choice for the past 3 years now.

You sound like a Jared's ad, or a Secret Shopper.
Loves it.
I actually like writing e-mails to companies when they don't fuck up. They send me free stuff. E-mail corporate and let them know. At the very least, they'll give everyone working there a nice pat on the back.

*lol*

My husband and I always deal with the same sales person at Jareds and we adore her. She even sends us cute thank you notes after she takes all of our money.
