I just need general advice on what I need to get for my dorm room and how to decorate. They just come w/ beds and the microfridge unit right?
6/14/2006 1:46:37 AM
they give you desks and chairs too.
6/14/2006 1:48:54 AM
The standard is posters. Slap a couple of those up. Maybe toss down a rug and maybe throw in a couch or futon if you can fit it. Add a TV and then wait until you get to move into a proper place of living.
6/14/2006 1:49:17 AM
get a loft if you really want space.its also pretty dependant on where you are living.
6/14/2006 1:54:13 AM

well, she's freshmeat, but i'll at least throw a few helpful responses in.if you're living somewhere like owen or tucker, where the closets are doorless, get a pretty curtain to hang there. it'll help hide a junky closet and add some color/pattern/etc to the room. i actually used a dark purple sheer, b/c it was dark enough to block out some light, but wasn't such a heavy look.string/rope/christmas lights are also another popular way to decorate a room. posters, art, etc like other people have said, just get attaching hooks/tape that doesn't rip the paint off. that = money.Do you know what building you're going to be in? I wouldn't buy and bring up too much shit till you see your room, meet the roommate, and get settled a little bit. Some dorms have less wallspace than you'd think. (Even though the rooms were big in Bragaw, a wall of windows, a wall of closets, and furniture leaves little hanging space, IMO.)
6/14/2006 2:18:24 AM
Get a carpet remnant that'll cover most of the floor. It'll be just as cheap as a thin area rug, but more comfortable to walk on and better looking. You don't need to go wall-to-wall since the beds and desks will cover a lot of area, but you'll want some form of carpet so you're not walking on a cold, dusty floor.
6/14/2006 3:04:16 AM
x4^ahhahahahahathat sounds like the worst fucking prom ever
6/14/2006 3:53:41 AM

Don't take dorm decoration too seriously, or people won't take you seriously.
6/14/2006 5:34:41 AM
There was a lengthy "welcome freshman" thread in the Lounge that got cleaned up.- Get a large (12x12 is a good size) thing of carpet. You can always cut to the exact room dimensions once it's in there. Don't pay a crazy amount for it either ... I got mine for $40's at Lowe's ... leftover from another project/decent quality.- Cheap coffee table / couch. Go to Goodwill for this.- Entertainment stand for TV/VCR/DVD. Go to Goodwill for this.- Some sort of stackable shelving. $20 at Walmart and I still use it in my Kitchen.- Small appliances for cooking: Toaster, Coffee Maker, George Foreman GrillI think that will max out at $100 or so. Don't buy anything incredibly nice for the dorms, save it for when you move into an apartment. What I listed is for comfortable living ... decorating is fairly simple and will come as you find things you like and want to put up.[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 7:56 AM. Reason : .]

Holy shit. This girl was like 8 when I started college.
6/14/2006 8:28:24 AM
and another thing to think about do...call your future roommate and decide on who's gonna get what as far as TV, DVD player, carpet etc...no need to show up day of and have two of everything...unless you WANT two of everything i suppose
6/14/2006 8:41:31 AM
^ I called Sousapickle's ass and I still had to bring everything.damn.
6/14/2006 8:48:37 AM
If you're staying in Bagwell/Becton/Berry they come w/lofts (new furniture was purchased after the renovation).I assume Syme/Gold/Welch will come with lofts now too since they are being renovated for next year.
6/14/2006 9:20:43 AM
since when are the closets in Owen and Tucker doorless?
6/14/2006 9:32:38 AM
If you want to be really cool get lots of beer and/or marijuana paraphernalia and halogen lamps.
6/14/2006 9:34:16 AM
bahahahhahaha dorm decorations. get a bunch of old movie posters for free from theaters. tape them onto your wall.oh yeah and tww news is on the scene on this one
6/14/2006 9:35:30 AM
^^^ i was wondering that too[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 9:35 AM. Reason : mine was always in the way]

They took off the closet doors in Owen and Tucker for the Autumnd 2003 kids. We had them in the 2002-2003 school year, buy my roommate's girlfriend lived in Owen in 2003-2004 and they were gone.
6/14/2006 9:51:55 AM
^^lee is larger than sullivan[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 11:34 AM. Reason : has larger rooms that is]
6/14/2006 11:33:20 AM
Yeah, Owen/Tucker definitely don't have doors on their closets anymore.Anyone lived in Watauga before? I've always wondered about those "balconies."
6/14/2006 12:00:38 PM
Yeah, I'm in Sullivan. What are the desks and chairs like? Do the desks have drawers? Do the closets in Sullivan have doors? I've already talked to my roommate, she should be calling me today when she gets home from vacation to discuss this stuff in more detail.
6/14/2006 2:47:07 PM
you might as well not bring anything if you're moving into sullivan, those rooms are small as shit
6/14/2006 2:49:04 PM
the chairs kind of rock back and forth, they don't have armsand the desks have drawersi bought a $20 fake leather office chair from goodwill b/c i hated sitting in the dorm chairs
6/14/2006 2:50:12 PM
the dorm chairs rockhaha no pun intendedps, make a lid for your trashcan
6/14/2006 2:55:06 PM
i would probably wait on furniture until after the first day, once you get a bit of a feel for how big your room is. you can probably fit more in there than you think originally with some creativity. but sullivan rooms are tiny, so you're not going to be able to fit a lot.my freshman year, spookyjon and i had a bookcase which served as a bookcase/tv stand/dvd rack/random shit holder. you might want to look into that.
6/14/2006 3:00:13 PM
this thread is making me feel old
6/14/2006 3:03:14 PM
yeah i also recommend getting an industrial strength shelf unit from wal-mart
6/14/2006 3:05:42 PM
Buy a toaster oven, not a toaster. Toasters are considered fire hazards because of the open coils. Also, the closets in Sullivan do have doors and the front rooms aren't too small, but if you're going to be in a back room you'll either have to bunk your beds or get a loft.
6/14/2006 5:39:23 PM
6/14/2006 6:13:43 PM
also, stack everything out with emptied alcohol bottles. There's a story in everyone. Even the RAs love the alcohol bottles.
6/14/2006 6:14:39 PM
as somebody mentioned, loft both of the beds. it will give you room to put a couch/futon and a desk underneath the lofts. this would only require buying one loft because you can just take the bottom bed off the bunk beds and use the mattress for the loft.we also took the doors off the closets and put the dressers in them to make more room. just stash the doors behind one of the beds.
6/14/2006 6:15:48 PM
At orientation, there should be 2 or 3 showrooms to give you ideas
6/14/2006 8:32:42 PM
a tall plant in which to hide a webcam is key
6/14/2006 8:42:33 PM
I'm in a C room, that's in the back right? Are the back rooms really smaller?
6/14/2006 8:53:17 PM
I was in a back room in Sully my freshman year, 505B I think, and it was fucking tiny. We had the beds, 2 desks, organizers galore on the dresser and a TV perched also on the dresser. The closet has some bad ass living space, and we also stowed stuff under the bunks. We both brought way too much shit but called each other and talked about what to bring. She got the TV and carpet, I brought the toaster oven and good food.
6/14/2006 9:26:56 PM
B & C rooms in Sullivan are tiny... A & D are much larger
6/14/2006 10:41:15 PM
I'm in Owen next year- anyone lived there before? And also, do you have to make your own loft or can you get one from the university?
6/14/2006 11:56:02 PM
i think IRC [inter-residence council] rents them, you can make your own also but there are regulations for wooden structures
6/15/2006 12:19:27 AM
^ I lived in owen.I have to say that out of all of the dorms I think that owen/tucker are some of the best for freshman - keep in mind that east campus had no a/c when I was living in dorms, it may well be better than owen/tucker now - but as far as ease of getting to different places on campus those pretty much take the cake imho.as far as actually living in them, i'd bring a rug/carpet remnant of some sort FOR SURE - that floor gets COLD in the mornings. I'd also bring some sort of toothbrush holder/something along those lines for your sink, it's kind of gross to have nasty toothbrushes lying around and making ugly spots on sinks.if you loft your beds you have loads of room, the rooms are pretty decently-sized already and i def. remember people having recliners in their rooms, couches, sometimes both at the same time... but i would say wait until you get there to buy a loft or build one, once you and your roommate figure out how you both want the room you can fix it how you like it. (if you both move in on friday or satur day then that's a perfect sunday/monday activity).
6/15/2006 1:46:17 AM
Dorm? Umpty eleventeen years ago...
6/15/2006 2:01:32 AM
Yeah, I lived in Tucker my freshman year, 03-04, and it's definitely a good hall. the rooms, IMO, are roomier than what I expected. moving in/out, up to the top floor wasn't fun, but for your freshman year, i guess I can't complain TOO much.
