Any tips, pointers, etc?I'm not talking about buying a case, stripping it down and modding it. I want to build one from the ground up.

as far as sound vibration goes:wood > steel > aluminumBut, wood will insulate the air in there and make it warm so you would need good cooling. Steel is the best construction material imo.If you want a Plexiglas case (which will also insulate), http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/298/1.

I prefer a mix of aluminum or steel and some plexi....not sure how much. And I plan to watercool so fan noise isn't an issue as much as drive noise

I had a friend who couldn't afford a case, so he just built his computer into a cardboard box. Not sure how it grounded, or kept from catching fire, but it worked.

Put it in a fishbowl and fill it with mineral oil.

^ don't do that. You have to keep certain things of the oil and everytime you want to change a cable you have to get oil all over your arm.To eliminate drive noise you could mount it with rubber grommets or use a rubber suspension system like the Antec P150 or Solo.Or you could purchase something like the Scythe Silent BOX. http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=340
