Theres no legal basis to an automatic lease renewal, you signed a contract for a fixed term. Give them 30 days notice and move.

its probably only automatic if you don't give any notice to move out when your current lease is over

Usually you go month to month by default after a lease runs out (technically, when the "initial period" ends). Is that some Preiss Co BS?

What exactly does it say?

When is your lease up?

if you read your lease and ask questions before you sign the contract, maybe you won't run into these problems

You may want to look at NC rental law. Like wumpWizard said, by law expired leases become month-to-month if you pay rent monthly--the default term is however often lease payments are due. As long as you continue to pay rent and they continue to accept the money, the lease remains valid.

Leases can have a provision that renews the lease for a similar term and at a reasonable price, if you have not notified/moved out of the place. Some jurisdictions consider the lease holder's intent to remain.

If a lease lapses without that provision, its a Tenacy at Will, which is month to month.

you want to see a scared leasing agent, go through the lease and cross out things you dont agree with.

i told barker a cleaning provision they snuck in there violated NC renter's law and i wasnt signing it. she looked like she was about to cry.
