I am trying to sell a car, and someone emailed asking me for the VIN number to run carfax. Is it safe to give out VIN number to strangers over email?Thanks,-Ann

I see VIN #'s on ebay listings all the time. I dont think they can put personally identifiable information in Carfax disclosures. I remember I bought my Rover and they list where it was registered and where it had service, but I couldnt find out anything about the owner due to privacy laws.

go for itnot like anyone's going to report it stolen or totalled with those vital 17 characters... right?

Just how easy is it to get a VIN by yourself? All you have to do is walk up to a parked car and look in the lower left corner of the windshield. Why would sending it over email be much different? It's not disclosing information that isn't readily available by other means.

Just to be on the safe side, give them the VIN's of a police car... I wonder how that would work out. humm...

I've never understood why people bother bluring license plates, unless you're afraid of someone tracking you down.[Edited on June 6, 2006 at 6:47 AM. Reason : or are breaking the law in the photo]
