So does this mean that people want to escape, but no one really has the balls or ovaries to do so?

San Francisco is pretty cool and the subway system is awesome.

I want to get the fuck out of here at some point, too. A big city somewhere far away from here.

hahahahahahahaha @ kansas.

Dude, after graduation, I moved to Kansas City for a year. Um. It fucking sucked. I moved back to Raleigh at the first opportunity. It's actually quite a unique place. I love Raleigh.

have fun in Kansas. I'll see you back here in about a year.

NYC would be pretty awesome, barring any other national incidents.

I always had a bad opinion of big cities. I was dreading a convention in New Orleans last year, but it was actually a great experience. The best part was I got a huge dinner of alligator, gumbo, and jambalaya, plus some beers for $20 including tip (at The Gumbo Shop). I'd definitely go back to New Orleans again...

...if it weren't under water now.

I'm probably moving to the Bay Area (not San Francisco but only like 20 miles away in the East Bay area).. it's awesome out here.

Come on now. It's just the same as the chance of a Hurricane smackign around Raleigh, a earthquake in the Bay Area, or a tornado in Kansas..

not likely

i have a sweet job, the only way i'd be going back to raleigh is if they moved me there and thats unlikely

sorry you hated kansas. i kinda like it. 1/2 of my family is from here and its quite nice.

I was kidding. I used to live in Kansas- tornados are some scary things, I probably don't want to ever live in tornado alley again.

You realize hole-in-the-wall shacks in San Fran are like $1 mil don't you?

^^ i'm just waiting for a damn tornado to come. i know they're not AS frequent toward the east but they still happen. i don't have a basement but work is 1/5 mile away and there is a huge basement if i really need to go. otherwise i have a storage thing under the stairs i could go into.

when i lived in illinois the tornado sirens went off but i could hardly hear them so i wasn't sure if they were going off. furthermore, i never heard a fucking toranado siren before so i didn't know what to do! luckily mike was there and i made him keep tabs on the internet while i fell asleep

hurricanes are way better. you can drive away from them if you want & there are always hurricane parties to go to. fuck tornados

big cities are fun to move to, but remember that, just like someone else said, small apts aren't cheap. i'd suggest perusing the different city craiglists and look at prices being offered and what's offered in the living situation. i had wanted to/planned on interning in NYC or San Francisco this summer, but my family's money situation wasn't too hot. So hopefully after graduation, I'll either go directly into employment, or do an internship to transition. It sucks b/c work experience is pretty important in what I want to go into, but I hope it'll work out in the end.

But San Fran is at the top of my list of cities I'd like to live in at some point and time.

Hyperbole but yeah it's very expensive. My parents bought a 4,000+ sq ft house close to SF and it was 1.4M (we have a LOT of mortgage matching from what we paid for our house in NC since my Dad's company made him transfer)...

You can rent IN San Fran from a pretty good apartment company (Archstone) for 1,300/month right now for a 1 BR..

It's scary as shit when you're 5 years old playing outside and all of a sudden the sky turns green, it starts to hail and the next thing you know you're being rushed down into the basement to get under a mattress under the pool table.

^^^^Yeah no kidding. When we moved here we thought hurricanes would be a big deal. Pffft. So far as I can tell, you guys have plenty of warning this far inland. Tornadoes just randomly pop up.

What? Yes I was. Nothing too terrible happened as far inland as Charlotte. The coast sure as shit got fucked up, granted, but if you live there you should be aware of the danger.

Have you ever seen a tornado? It's like a big wall of gray that sounds like a thousand grumbling trains coming toward you. It doesn't take a week to travel across the Atlantic before striking, it comes the same day and then a whole city is gone. It's awful.

You were in Charlotte? Again, you weren't in Raleigh so you don't know what it was like here. It was much worse than Raleigh and it wasn't the acute destruction of a tornado so much as the widespread destruction of trees down and power out for two fucking weeks in the middle of summer. No AC, and for those of us on well water, no running water. Don't sit there like an arrogant prick and tell me hurricanes ain't shit.

Yup, we were a mere 30 minutes south of Raleigh and still went 13 days without contact to the outside world. Pulled our drinking water up in a fucking bucket. We tried clearing the highway ourselves but gave up after we cleared a 1 mile stretch with no end in sight and had to conserve the gas/oil. Shit was real, yo.

[Edited on June 4, 2006 at 7:54 PM. Reason : ...Though not terrible. We could have gone much longer, as long as no one needed medical treatment.]

Natural disasters are still natural disasters- duh. But I'm sure I'm more terrified of tornadoes because they terrified the shit out of me as a kid.
