okay, i actually posted a thread like this a year or so ago and got some good suggestions, so...i'm finding myself leaning towards two types of metal (i'm making up genres or guessing as to where these fit...feel free to correct me - some of these seem to fit in different categories, or make sarcastic comments about how much they suck ):"epic" metalsonata arcticademons & wizardsavantasialuca turillidragonforceblind guardiangamma rayiced earthwithin temptation"power/progressive" metalangel dustangra (i don't know where they fit)balance of powerin flameskamelotnightwishstratovariusgroups i've listened to, but don't really care for (based on the bands above, if you know of particular songs that you think i'd like from these bands, please feel free to suggest them)at the gatesedguy ("down to the devil" is okay)evergreygardenianthe gatheringhelloween (except for "mr. torture", which is hilarious)nevermoreopethsymphony xvirgin steelelike i said, any suggestions/comments/criticisms are welcome...thanks!

First band that came to mind when I read the bands that you do like is Dark Tranquillity. Also check out the band Passenger, the side project of the lead singer of In Flames.

Insomnium is good epic metal.

Yeah, I'm really trying to think of how those bands you mentioned relate at all to the ones he listed, and I'm coming up short. Some I'd recommend:Wuthering HeightsFalconerSavatageDreams of SanitySinergyNarniaWintersunJag PanzerBal-SagothBorknagarSoilworkChildren of BodomDunno if you'll like all of them or not based on some of the ones you mentioned not liking being reasonably similar to some you do like, but it's worth giving them a shot. I'm sure you'll dig a few of them, at least.[Edited on May 30, 2006 at 12:17 AM. Reason : ]

Yngwie Fuckin Malmsteenand if you want the most hardcore band evermay i suggest The D

Shaman should be good if you liked Angra, I believe it's mostly the same band. I like them. Dream Theater is always good. If you want some of their heavier stuff, I'd recommend Awake or Train of Thought. Ark is some decent power prog. If you do try out Savatage, I'd recommend Dead Winter Dead. It's my favorite of the three discs or so I have from them.Vanden Plas and Pain of Salvation also might be worth looking in to. Rammstein is also worth checking out. Although their older stuff was more industrial, the newer two feel somewhere between rock and metal to me. [Edited on June 2, 2006 at 3:22 AM. Reason : more]

circle takes the square is pretty awesome, but i don't think i'd call them metalcore.
6/2/2006 8:31:53 AM
21 posts and no mention of Arch Enemy? I'll recommend their older stuff with Johan Liiva. I'm not sure you would enjoy Angela Gossow's extreme vocal style judging by the bands you listed. As far as power metal I would check out Primal Fear, Seven Witches, and Dream Evil.and of course the almighty Dio.If you're looking for something strange and unique check out Arcturus and Bal-Sagoth.[Edited on June 2, 2006 at 9:11 AM. download winamp, if you don't already have it, and open up the media library and go through the shoutcast radio and winamp music. There's a metal section in shoutcast and metal is under hard rock in winamp music. Several of the bands already listed have songs and or video's on there. So if nothing else you can atleast check out some of the stuff being suggested. And just listen to random stuff in those categories every once in a while. That's what i do sometimes, you end up hearing a lot of shit you don't like or that is just "ok", but sooner or later you'll probably find something you like.

dude, you MUST get Heavenly...that is some of the best power metal out there, and listen to more of Edguy...you make think it is cheezy (and it is) but nothing cheers me up more than listening to themif you are looking for more traditional-type metal, try Silent Force and Heaven's Gateif you want to delve into the world of melodic death metal/doom/sludge stuff, then you definitely want to check out Swallow the Sun and Swarm of the Lotus and The Oceanalso, it's already been mentioned, but EVERYONE should listen to Soilwork...get on it

ooo trivium, nice mention.coma - the band is from romania, so i dont know how easy it would be to find it here, but it's pretty sweet metal if you do.

Oh wow, I gotta say thanks for pointing me to a band that I really dig. I had started going through the list of groups you like (since you listed a number of the power bands that I like) but didn't run all the way through the epic bands. Then I heard Dragonforce on XM Liquid Metal with a couple songs off their new album yesterday. HOLY SHIT. These guys are quite different from most metal I listen to but are wicked. Now I gotta hit up that "epic" band list you got if and of them are half as good as Dragonfoce, I'll have an iPod worth of metal soon.
