yeah so i started hearing the clicks. i've never dealt with this before, but i know it means my hard drive is prolly dying. i backed up a few things, but i'm still working on a bigger back up to cover all the important stuff.is there anything that can be done to fix the HD, or is it beyond fixing at this point? i try to run chkdsk /f /r (to repair and check bad sectors and everything) and i get a BSOD every time it makes it to 19% or so.any suggestions, besides the obvious backing up my files? also, what are the chances of newegg letting me return the drive if it fails? i bought it at the end of march/beginning of april.

a lot of manufacturers have diagnostic tools to test for drive failure, as far as any repair I'm not sure of any long term fixes for a head crash though there might be for other problems

mine crashed recently but gave me no warning If it was several months ago you'll probably have to use the manufacturers warranty.Who made the drive? There is a chance that my drive is repairable so I bought a PCB board for it off of ebay. Hasn't come in yet but we'll see.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152025thats the driveit looks like i can still try to RMA the drive with newegg. do you think they'd work with me and send the new drive before i send this one, so i can try to backup the data before i send them the dying one?i'm pretty sure it's the HD goin bad...[Edited on May 29, 2006 at 1:12 PM. I bought 4 of these drives for an array and one of them was DOA.I thought it was a fluke but this thread is not making me happy. I am going to be contacting NewEgg today.(There is a 3 year warranty of the drives.)

Here's what you do:#1: Back up anything important. This should always be the first course of action when HD failure is suspected.#2: Download DFT (drive fitness test) software here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v407_b00.isoBurn it to a CD, boot off it, and run the advanced test on the disk, not the simple one. If it fails:#3: Call Samsung and request an "advanced exchange" for the defective drive. This means they ship the replacement drive first and you ship your drive back to them after the replacement arrives. They'll want your CC# in case you don't return the drive. Be sure to tell them you've run drive fitness test software and verfied the failure.

^thanksi actually contacted newegg already. they are working with me. they wouldn't do an advanced replacement, but they did a refund order (if i return it within 14 days) and i ordered a new HD from them:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136003i'll just back up the entire disk to the new one and send it back. is it possible to image the old one to the new one if they are dif sizes? the new one is bigger.
