How exactly does the speed listed translate to a regular processor? I'm trying to understand what the performance difference is between an Intel 2.6HT and one of the new core duo. maybe i'm asking the question poorly... I dunno.. any insight would be appreciated..

I've consulted this chart a few times.http://www.systemshootouts.org/processors.html

dude! thanks.. that helps
5/23/2006 1:30:35 PM
anybody seen anything on how the new conroes will compare?
7/12/2006 12:04:01 PM
the conroe is going to RAPE just about everything. It beats the shit out of the FX chips
7/12/2006 2:04:52 PM
just one r and it becomes "Cornroe"lawl
7/12/2006 4:15:23 PM
a tangent question:how rare do you think those conroes will be? You think it will be like the xbox 360?Cuz I would seriously camp out in front of a store and grab 1000 bucks worth if I could sell them back for twice as much on ebay like some of you kids did for the xbox.
7/12/2006 5:27:22 PM
goodluck... 1000 bucks is likely to get you 1... maybe 1 and a half when they first come out... but i could be wrong... havnt checked the price list
7/12/2006 6:58:09 PM
well if they are dual cores 1 and a half is still 3 cores!
7/12/2006 7:18:45 PM
^^ Actually, espescially at the high end, most sites are projecting the street/market price to be MUCH more than MSRP. If you found a place selling say... the Core 2 Extreme at MSRP, then yes, you might be able to make a profit on that.
7/12/2006 7:19:20 PM
the e6600 looked to be in the 400 range, I could score a couple, maybe keep one, sell the other for double price, efectively geting myslf a free cpu.I would be willing to campt out for a free cpu, but do you think I could sell back one for twice the price? I have no idea how te supply of these things is gonna be, there arent stories about it like there were for the xbox360 before it came out.
7/12/2006 8:19:13 PM
Since the extreme edition will be the fastest thing out there and in high demand by gamers and enthusiasts, you could do it with that model. I won't pretend to know enough to even talk about what demand for other conroe processors will look like though.
7/13/2006 7:28:31 AM
you really think I could spend 1500 on a cpu and then turn around and sell it for 3K? I dont know manynthisiasts who would buy a cpu off me for 3000 bucks when they could just wait and get one later. Is anybody else considering doing this? Have man conroes showed up on ebay yet and how much have ppl been able to resell them for?
7/13/2006 8:32:12 AM
Nah, not double like that, maybe 20% higher.
7/13/2006 10:05:55 AM
dell will have these processors day 1 and they aren't going to mark up prices. people will just buy a machine with the chip, and sell the rest of the machine. these aren't consoles for spoiled kids with mommy footing the bill
7/13/2006 10:28:04 AM
But how many kids do you know who buy the top of the line video card every time it comes out? I can think of quite a few that are friggin obsessed and always have to be playing the newest shit without any lag, but your right, kids who are that insane are probably gonna be getting their own cpus and not doing the ebay thing.
7/13/2006 7:35:52 PM
This isn't going to work. Stop dreaming you dumbass.

Lots of really good press out there about it stomping all over AMDs current offerings. Personally, for the time being, I am looking forward to the X2s coming down in price so I can give my current non-gaming AMD rig a nice boost over the Venice 3800 I have in here at the moment.
7/14/2006 9:02:35 PM
^^ nearly $470 for 270mhz (diff between top of the line and just below)? doesn't seem worth it...am i missing something?
7/14/2006 9:35:50 PM
That's generally how it goes in the early stages, the higher speed sorts get the big premium prices, and why not when eager geeks and folks with money to burn will buy it. Read the reviews, the differences between the 6300 and 6400 isn't much in real world performance terms, but the difference between the 6300 and the 6600 is (per anand), so that $124 difference may definitely be worth it.
7/14/2006 10:55:46 PM
^^ I think the extreme has a faster bus... but i'm not certain. In any case, Intel's "EXTREME!!!" processors have always been a bit on the ridiculous side.
7/14/2006 11:31:38 PM
So I have noticed every reviewer has gona gaga over these things. If I understand correctly, the Core 2 Duo is a 32 bit processor, no? How will C2D fare when the Vista comes and things start being 64 bit specific? The power consumption advantage should still be there, but what about the performance?
7/18/2006 1:13:36 PM
Haha, gg newegg, faced with massive price cuts in the very near future, you step up the advertising effort on your AMD parts. Hate to break it to you, but I'm an informed consumer.
7/18/2006 2:28:59 PM
eh, i consider myself a fairly-informed consumer and i choose to go with AMD (have since my first 1ghz tbird 5 years ago)...they have always had the price per performance advantage in my experience
7/18/2006 3:03:22 PM
AMD has always sucked...and I wish I were trolling.
7/18/2006 3:13:07 PM
you might want to add some qualifiers to that statement...otherwise you're talking out of your ass (again)
7/18/2006 3:21:13 PM
Sucked how, because I'd like to think a mod might be wanting to suspend you since it seems apparent all you are trying to do is stir up trouble in this section these past couple of days.
7/18/2006 3:41:54 PM
days?
7/18/2006 5:18:17 PM
"always" is a qualifier
7/18/2006 9:09:15 PM
and add means add
7/19/2006 8:44:05 AM
Anyway, ignoring the resident side trackerany comments on this
7/19/2006 10:07:14 AM
Still haven't seen much info about how the Duo will fare on Vista and 64 bit specific stuff.
7/24/2006 11:26:20 AM
who said anything about Vista being 64 specific?1CYPHER it's obvious you're trying too hard to fit into the techie group.
7/24/2006 1:37:10 PM
7/24/2006 2:19:05 PM
Guess I just overlooked the literature.
7/24/2006 3:15:51 PM
well to your credit, it wasnt on the Intel site at all. I had to go to a review I read on Extremetech to find it explicitly spelled out though. If anyone can dig through Intel's own website and find that the Core 2 Duo processor actually includes the EM64T technology, you're a better man than I.
