I have been looking at the LG LRM-519 lately. It runs around $350, but no subscription fees.http://cgi.ebay.com/LRM-519-BRAND-NEW-SEALED-LG-LRM519-DVR_W0QQitemZ9729937284QQcategoryZ79867QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemWhat do you guys think?

I've been looking at it for a while now. I'd like to try it out personally, but here's my qualms. It only has an NTSC (not ATSC) tuner. If it had a digital tuner (w/ HD support), then I'd be all over it. In a couple of years when all the analog signals are cut off, and everyone has digital cable... it'll be a brick. In the meantime, pretty sweet. I just have a feeling LG (lucky goldstar BTW) is about to release another DVR to replace the 519.Some of the great things about the 519 are1) External hdd support through USB2) No subscriptions anymore3) Transfer content over network4) Dual layer dvd recorderI don't think it has dual tuner support though(??)

I don't think is has a dual tuner. I understand what you mean... someone has to release a DVR that supports ATSC/HDTV soon enough. I suppose I will hold off until then. But I can't see myself bending over for a $17/month fee from tivo so I was looking at these alternatives.

Time warner has $7/month for the HD DVR. You can't find anything that can possibly compete with that as far as I know. You can spend a shitload more for better quality, but it's not very proportional.

we would have to upgrade to digital cable then, right?[Edited on May 23, 2006 at 1:12 PM. Reason : blah]

the only way to get something that records hd, has expansion capabilities, a burner, etc all without a monthly fee, is to build your own.
5/23/2006 1:12:24 PM
unless LG or another company releases an HD box similar to the one LG already sells
5/23/2006 1:13:52 PM
If I could get that and the guide would update automatically I would get rid of digital cable altogether.

Aparently before this product was released and flopped MS was going to charge for the subscription. If I had the money right now I would order it.
5/23/2006 5:35:56 PM
if you call tivo and tell them you are cancelling due to your cable company providing dvr they will ask you to keep the subscription and only pay $7 a month, to match the cable companies price.

Tivo basic is available on toshiba and pioneer dvr/dvd-r's. What other NON-TiVo DVR's are out there? And does anyone have any experience with them?LG LRM-519ReplayTV (I heard it's crap from someone, something about HD's fail often)[Edited on May 24, 2006 at 9:38 PM. Reason : replayTV]

I've had good luck with Dish Network's 100-hour DVR. It's was programmed by some Korean retards when we got it, but they keep automatically flashing the code and it gets better with each revision. It doesn't make that annoying Tivo sound either.
5/24/2006 10:18:02 PM
wtf is tivo basic? they just show you what's on local network tv?
5/24/2006 11:05:01 PM
^You can only schedule recordings for 3 days out and you can't schedule a "season pass" meaning tell it to record all the episodes of one show every week.
5/24/2006 11:32:45 PM
but it's FREE just like the damn thing should be.
5/25/2006 6:21:26 AM
So what are the options for a guy that thinks it'll be cool to pause live TV and record shows intelligently but doesn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a glorified VCR?Maybe I can upgrade my computer. I hear you can make it into a tivo with the right stuff.
5/25/2006 7:49:26 PM
I have a high end ATI card and it has DVR software. Its a pain in the ass to operate. I would rather have the DVR a seperate unit hooked to the TV. If I ever get a tv with a DVI input I am going to get/build an XP media center PC and hook to it.
5/25/2006 8:56:27 PM
I actually have a DVICO Fusion 5 card which does HDTV off of cable. So I have a device capable of doing most of this stuff... problem is that sometimes it records right, sometimes it doesn't. I suppose messing with it more will fix it, but my main problem with that is that when the recorder or tv card are running... my CPU doesn't want to do too much else (beware most TV tuner cards are CPU intensive).I think I will wait for something similar to the LG or toshiba to come out capable of recordings/messing with HDTV
5/25/2006 9:52:45 PM
has anyone used ReplayTV? For $150 it sounds worth it.
5/25/2006 10:07:45 PM
^plus $13/month?
5/25/2006 10:16:40 PM
damn it, why the hell did I think it didn't have a subscription when it says it right there on the page. Fuck all these companies trying to make money off of what tv guide already does for free.
