I have a brother that works at a dealership in Kentucky and I want to buy a car from him to get a good deal. Does anyone know if I'll have to pay KY and NC taxes and fees?

i'm guessing you pay kentucky sales tax, but the HUT would be tacked on when you registered the car in NC[Edited on May 21, 2006 at 5:55 PM. Reason : why dont you ask him? he should know for sure.]

Well I know if you live in another state and buy a car in NC then you pay NC sales tax and like a dollar for a temp tag, but then you pay your state DMV later to get your tags. Is it really worth going to another state to buy a car anyway?

I'm getting the car at invoice by going out of state, saving me about $2000I found out today (if anyone else cares) that you pay the sales tax in whatever state you buy the car and then if its lower than NC, you pay the difference (basically, NC gives you credit for the tax you payed)

you can typically get any new car anywhere for 1-2% under invoice with little haggling without a trade-in - why are you going out of state again?

what kind of car are you buying?

^^ is correctI highly doubt you are getting the deal you think you are. You aren't getting ripped off either, but factor in the hassle of going out of state and it might not be worth it--unless you really just want your brother to get the extra sale..

^depends on what kind of car you are getting. If it's a normal, non luxury car, then you should be getting it below invoice. Luxury is usually at invoice. Rare cars in high demand like the prius (still?) will get above invoice. The best time to buy is at the end of the month and the quarter. Go to the edmunds forum for your car and see what people are paying. Some are probably getting some great deals[Edited on May 23, 2006 at 1:33 AM. Reason : sdfsdf]

I'm getting the Jetta TDI. I highly doubt that these are going for below invoice because VW can't meet new emissions standards in time to make a 2007 TDI so there wont be another one until 2008
