screw that...best value laptop anywhere is a toshiba...i buy them for our company all the time and they hold up without any problems...best prices i can find for the machine (this obviously does not include insane slickdeals.net deals)...depends on your price range but i JUST bought, not two weeks ago, for $750 after rebates (add $50 for upgrade)

14.1" widescreen
1.83ghz with centrino
100gb 5400rpm sata hd
1gb ddr2 ram
128mb shared video
dl dvd burner
integrated wireless
fingerprint reader (yes, pointless, but didn't have much choice)
5-in-1 card reader
$50 upgrade for 12-cell battery

beat that.

What's the warranty on one of those?

jm, how "cheap" are you looking for? And what are your "needs"?

acer is pretty good for the price as well.

[Edited on May 19, 2006 at 12:40 PM. Reason : had a toshiba before it. both work well and were cheap]

all laptops are alike when it comes to components. Durability comes from material and workmanship, and that is the only place where manufacturers can create margins.

That said, get a Dell. I have no experience using IBMs just because they tend to be sad looking and way overpriced. Dells, Toshibas, Acers, and Averatec are all good.

which are obviously the way to go for consumers trying to save money.

That used to be the case, but not anymore. Thinkpads have dropped signifigantly in price since the Lenovo aquisition. Still more than the average laptop with the same specs, but not way overpriced like they used to be. That said, I'd still get a Dell anyday over an IBM unless I found a crazy deal (like I did on some nicely decked out R52s for $700)

Something like http://slickdeals.net/#p7497 would have been perfect for you. Battery life wouldn't get stellar, but thats a trade off for a brand new 1GB RAM laptop for under $400.

Keep an eye on http://slickdeals.net for the hottness

processor speed: doesn't matter
ram: 512mb at the bare minimum, 1GB is preferred
optical drive: cd burner/dvd reader drive should be fine (unless you really want to burn dvds)
hard drive: really doesn't matter unless you wanna store tons of music and movies on it
Internal Wireless: any, just make sure its included
Battery: more cells the better, but unless you need to be unplugged for > 2hrs doesnt matter

i dont know anything about acers but this is a nice deal for the specs

not as good as a killer slickdeal but still pretty nice

1 year anything goes wrong with it they fix it for free...i've never gotten an extended warranty on any of them for 3 reasons: 1.) price, 2.) i can fix most stuff myself, 3.) previous experience makes me think the odds of something happening are slim (though of course something CAN go wrong)

yes, I think you should.

try slickdeals.net and xpbargains.com to find a decent dell for $700

I bought mine for $1300 a year ago (17 inch, centrino, 100GB HDD) and haven't repented it at all. Don't get anything more than the standard warranty, IMO. I didn't pay for warranty and my laptop is still hale and hearty.

Yeah i thought she won it too. biggest negative about that one is the fact its used vs new.
i don't see whats so bad about a 60GB hard drive for her price range.

i would stay away from ebay either way. if you want used make a thread in the classifieds looking for a used laptop and me or someone else will sell you one. if you want new, spend the $400-$500 and get something brand new with a warranty.
