I'm picking her up from the Durham Animal Shelter on Monday!

She's a black lab/border collie mix, and she's approximately 10 weeks old.

I've been looking for a good vet, and I've read the threads through the search. I live like five minutes from the Glenwood Animal Hospital and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations or experiences about it.

Thanks!

Bowman Animal Hospital off Creedmoor Rd. is the best vet in Raleigh.

^Are you human?

How can you not like dogs?

That's almost like not enjoying oxygen.

Well it turns out two puppies at the Durham shelter tested positive for parvo. The people there assured me that Allie was fine and that the puppies were nowhere near her in the shelter. Also, Allie has already received two vaccinations against parvo, so that's good.

I talked to three different vets today and no one could tell me for sure what to do as far as picking her up today and canceling my weekend plans to visit my parents for mother's day or waiting until Monday like originally planned.

I hustled around and finished doing the things I needed to do since I wasn't prepared for her to come home today. But by the time I got to the shelter it was closed.

She just got spayed today, so I'm sure they'll be keeping her separate; and of course, they cleaned up the area where the parvo puppies were, but I'm still worried. I'll be there as soon as it opens in the morning, but ya know. I just hope everything is OK.

They're dirty, messy, and loud.

Why are people so offended when you say you don't like dogs. Who cares? I have cats. You don't like cats. Good for you.

Yea, that pretty much sums it up. Dirty, Loud, smelly, annoying, and really needy. But other than that they are great.

Plus it doesn't help that I am allergic. So yes, obviously I am not human.

I wanted more than "That's a good vet; my sister/gf works there," which is what most of the old threads have. I wanted more specific information about THIS particular vet because it's the most convenient to me. I wanted to see if people had personal experiences with it.

And yes, I wanted attention cuz I adopted a dog. I'd think that was clear from the thread title.

Sue me.

... for Allie to poop on!

(Not the biggest fan of Bowman, as stated numerous times so no need to get into that again)

I've also heard good things about Glenwood/Oberlin. Considering they are the closest for you, it is a no-brainer! Cute dog and great breed combination for a companion animal. gg, for taking the rescue route too.

I've rescued a lot of animals and Boulevard animal hospital (off of Western) has alwasy been very good with my animals and always help me out with finding cheaper ways to do things.
I know that it looks like a whole in the wall, but both Dr. Tom and Dr. Fenton have been very informative, understanding and helpful for anything I need. I use both because my little Holly is deathly afraid of men, but my monster loves Dr.Tom.
I have had a number of strange issues come up... like Monty managing to find and swallow a bottle of pills, and they always can make room for me immediately. I switched vets for awhile, and was using a different vet at the time that he did that and they couldn't fit me in at all that day... called them up and while they said they were full, they understood my concern and managed to at least have to tech look at him and the Dr was able to get to him shortly after.
Every experience that I have had with them has been a good one.
But, your puppy is adorable!

parkway animal hospital in cary is very good, but EXPENSIVE (more so than the usual). I know someone who worked there, and she said it was because they make it a point to have the latest equipment(which doesn't necessarily make a difference in quality).

It sort of reminded me of the king of the hill episode about vets.

Well I just put her in her kennel for the night. What a first day.

She's definitely a biter. I've taken to turning her over on her back and holding her until she submits whenever she bites someone. It's not a big deal right now; the biting doesn't hurt, but obviously that's not the point. She can't be doing that when she's bigger. Of course, this was only the first day.

She's adorable when she's calm, but she can be quite gremlin-like at times. But that's the way puppies go I guess.

Any suggestions as far as housetraining. I've been doing some things and I have a puppy-training book, but if anyone has something that worked for them, I'm definitely willing to give it a try.

Thanks!

please becareful with that rolling onto the belly. that can screw up a dog. If you have a very dominant dog, they can eventually lash out from that. or if she is very submissive, it can make her more submissive and you can eventually have problems. If she bites, yelp as loud as you can. do it EVERYTIME she does it! Think about how the other puppies in the litter would treat her when she would bite her them. That is how they learn. or you can grab her muzzle and do a firm NO. Do not let go of her muzzle until she has stopped squirming (sorry for spelling). That is how her mother would teach her.

she is cute. thanks for rescuing a puppy!

She's gotten so big!

And I'm happy to report that yesterday was her first accident-free day.

She likes to stand IN the water while she drinks it.

I think its great that you adopted the dog, but what is it with everyone and labs? To me, the bully breeds look so much better.

Labs, in my own personal experience, are easy to train, and really good with people, especially children. I have yet to hear a news story about how someone's lab mauled a kid.

If I was going to get a dog, which I don't foresee happening, that's the kind I would hope to get.

It all depends on how a dog is trained. Sure the type of breed has something to do with it, but I'm sure one could make a lab aggressive enough to attack a child. My Boxer, one of the bully breed dogs, loves kids. Personally, I want a dog that hates kids, cause that will insure that it keeps the little shits out of my yard, instead of running up to them jiggling like my boxer does now. But thats just me. I hate labs cause I think they're ugly and stupid. But to each his own.
