5/6/2006 1:43:15 AM
Damn, good find on the sign! I didn't know it was that old...in 1939 that tunnel must have led from basically nowhere to nowhere. Though I guess some of the south campus dorms and Reynolds were either in construction or planned...
5/6/2006 1:43:31 AM
^right, turlington and alex. were completed in '39
5/6/2006 1:45:01 AM
Holy shit.Even after all that time, it looks much better than I would have imagined.
5/6/2006 2:12:39 AM
must skate through it
5/6/2006 2:16:42 AM
damn , im gonna drive back tonight so i can be the first kid to whip some UNC fag's ass tryin to pain that bitch
5/6/2006 2:20:41 AM
supposedly the brick is covered with a special chemical that allows paint to be hosed off
5/6/2006 2:21:17 AM
holy shit! I think youre right^I was wondering why the water on the bricks from the rain had beaded up as if it were on wax paperneat shit
5/6/2006 2:34:37 AM
that looks awesomeplease, if you're going to paint it, KEEP THE PAINT INSIDE THE TUNNELwhy would you want to mess up how nice it looks now with the bricks on the outside?
5/6/2006 2:38:56 AM
the becton/berry/bagwell dorm group that was renovated were also pub works admin buildings. I helped put the levators into those dorms, you would not beleive how much old stuff had to be left in place and sealed up during asbestos removal.
5/6/2006 3:12:54 AM
It looks like a cool place to chill.
5/6/2006 3:15:35 AM
wow, i can't even place where you were standing when you took those pics. what a huge change. the brickwork looks incredible.
5/6/2006 7:58:01 AM
I can't wait until some dumbasses paint over all the lights.
5/6/2006 10:20:13 AM
DAMN KIDS AIN'T GOT NO RESPECT FOR NOTHIN
5/6/2006 10:30:14 AM
i can't wait to touch the original walls before they're completely painted over.
5/6/2006 10:42:09 AM
too late ^^^there was paint on the lights this mornini mean - at least wait till graduation
5/6/2006 10:44:00 AM
they need to put some stainless steel guards over them lights
5/6/2006 11:00:08 AM
5/6/2006 11:12:12 AM
I want to know if that big concrete wall is for painting
5/6/2006 11:18:58 AM
i want to walk through it once more before i graduate! it looks awesome
5/6/2006 11:23:41 AM
wait, so the stairs are gone on the brickyard side? from the pictures, it looks like they levelled it, and layed bricks. if so, that's pretty money. those stairs sucked balls. then again, they were a good quick workout, and it was fun when bitches wore miniskirts.
5/6/2006 11:49:28 AM
levelling it out was the whole idea behind the project. they were making it so the tunnel would be wheelchair accessible so people wouldn't have to wheel themselves so far to cross the tracks like everybody's had to do lately.

^^^^^Like the idiot who scratched "mrwillis15@hotmial.com" in the USTL elevator right after it was opened. [Edited on May 6, 2006 at 12:12 PM. Reason : up]

Typed the way it was written.
5/6/2006 12:33:49 PM
i walked through it.
5/6/2006 1:32:03 PM
wow, i'm impressed
5/6/2006 2:49:42 PM
It's pretty fuckin' sweet, though it seems completely foreign. The bookstore side seems like the stairs are steeper, and the low clearance the leveling created between the Yarbrough/Dabney bridge and the tunnel walkway is a little odd to the eye.It didn't occur to me that instead of being gold originally, someone had already painted over the 1939 PWA sign.
5/6/2006 8:43:42 PM
how about we NOT PAINT THE NICE BRICKWORKand lets NOT PAINT THE LIGHTSk?
5/7/2006 11:28:10 AM
^ i wish it was that simple
5/7/2006 11:30:38 AM
vinylbandit, one of my friends painted it gold after someone had sprayed red and green all over it.
5/7/2006 11:30:50 AM
I’ve still got 1 exam left & graduation, maybe I’ll get to use it once. Watching people on crutches walking around extra long distances in the name of being more accessible to the disabled was fun, but I guess that’s all over now after its late opening. I’m sure it’ll be a dreary sight with the lights, walls, & bricks graffitied, full of fumes, & wet from the rain by the time I see it in person, but I would like to see it one last time before I move away.
5/7/2006 11:38:20 AM
i'm willing to bet the paint will wash off the bricks in the rain.
5/7/2006 11:42:06 AM
they need to move the sign somewhere else around the tunnel
5/7/2006 11:42:09 AM
move it outside the paint area
5/7/2006 11:49:42 AM
how long will the chemical they treated the bricks with last? how many rains, paints, and wash offs can it handle? can it last 4 and a half years, long enough to get 1 class entirely through without seeing permanently painted bricks? With this project which was already expensive enough, had complications, & opened late I’m not sure that if they had the option of doing it right or doing in the budget that they’d go for doing it right.
5/7/2006 12:00:25 PM
can't they just reapply the chemical?
5/7/2006 1:10:38 PM
the construction project head said the application (of the chemical) will last 20 years or so, then they would have to apply it againIt won't allow the paint to just wash away. It just makes it's complete removal with a pressure washer gun possible.
5/7/2006 1:40:33 PM
where is the original sign located?
5/7/2006 1:44:32 PM
it's on the right wall (if you're walking to central campus from the residence halls) in the first half of the tunnel
5/7/2006 1:45:35 PM
why must we paint the sign?
5/7/2006 2:27:25 PM
5/7/2006 2:33:43 PM
why must people paint the lights?
5/7/2006 3:09:49 PM
Oh, fucking shit, NOW, it's open right after I had to cut across campus for each class. GJ!!!!
5/7/2006 6:56:38 PM
and within 6 months, noone will remember that it was ever even closedand it'll be BUSINESS AS USUAL[Edited on May 7, 2006 at 8:55 PM. Reason : +]
5/7/2006 8:54:05 PM
someone should tear down that sign, clean it, and cement it somewhere outside the painting areafuck waiting for the school to do it, someone just take care of that
