You may have noticed the ads on TV urging the General Assembly to put an end to increasing the NC gas tax. Bill Graham, who is funding this campaign, will be hosting a rally in downtown Raleigh on May 9. There will be free BBQ and a beach music band. If you're interested, their website is here.http://www.gastaxrally.com/

The gas tax should stay as it is. The tax is needed to pay for construction and repair of our highway infrastructure. Otherwise, the funds needed will be raided from education, environmental and other "non-essential" (sarcasm) budgets. The gas tax is the fairest tax out there, it only taxes those who use the resource. If you want to pay less tax, waste less gas.

I agree that 100% of the funds aren't getting to where they are supposed to be...but its better than yanking the bottom out of other crtitical programs that are underfunded.

Over the past 5 years the highway trust fund which is funded by the gas tax has had $1 billion raided from it for projects such as a teacup museum. How is that a fair tax?

^ And that's my complaint.I'd like a new government and less taxes, unless they're going to start spending the tax money responsibly.

^^ The notion that cutting taxes will force lower government spending is optimistic, to say the least. Instead of attending a rally based on short term stratagy and consumer "greed," for loss of a less extreme word, we should be holding rallies against tea-cup museums etc.

You all act like "consumer greed" is the epitome of all evil. What about government greed? Oh, right, that's just fine. We should just throw more money at an entity that has proven that it is either more than willing to waste it or to inept to be fiscally responsible.Right, damn the consumer and their greed – driving to work to earn money to put food on the table and teacup museums in a downtown they can no longer afford to drive to.

Yeah, we should all band together and not go to work ever again, because that is the only place I drive to/from nowadays. That will show 'em. We can even pay less income tax in the process. Pure profit [Edited on May 3, 2006 at 1:41 PM. Reason : -]

short-term pain. long-term gain.

^ That short term could be even shorter if Exxon and BP managed to gain their drilling rigs free-reign in Saudi Arabia....
