This morning i was too tired to go eat so i decided to heat up yesturdays food that was wrapped nicely in aluminum foil. I've always known about foil and the microwave so i wrapped the foil wrapped food in several paper towels until no foil was exposed. I made sure none was exposed, put it in for 30 seconds and went to the bathroom. When i got back the microwave was still going but smoke was pouring out. THE MICROWAVE JUST CAUGHT ON FIRE. I alerted my suitemates and they helped me extinguish it but small particles and smoke got all over my room. I opened the window and used the fan to get the smoke out but the smell is still here and in all my stuff. I've tried fabreeze but that hasn't helped much. Also, have any of you ever seen microwaves spontaneously combust? It was only 1 year old and i made sure no foil was exposed and could not be undone. I'm going to try and file a claim with kenmore after exams.

I did this with a chicken biscuit butI DIDN'T LEAVE THE ROOM FOR 30 SECONDS
5/2/2006 10:36:02 PM
it would have just sparked if you didnt wrap it but since you wrapped it in paper towels thats what caused the fire
5/2/2006 10:37:55 PM
hepa filter based expensive machines, but we're talking several hundred bucksalso several cigar stores/magazines sell candles that help remove the odor of smoke
5/2/2006 10:38:10 PM
This is the funniest thing I have ever heard. Dude, covering up the metal with a paper towel doesn't do shit. OMG...lol...Actually I just did a little reading, and I may be wrong about that.[Edited on May 2, 2006 at 10:43 PM. Reason : sss]

my friend microwaved a turd once. the smell was so bad you could see it. the smell got in the curtains and everyone threw up. they had to evacuate the entire floor of the hotel
5/2/2006 10:43:11 PM
^that is awful. Was the foil touching any part of the microwave?[Edited on May 2, 2006 at 10:48 PM. Reason : sss]
5/2/2006 10:44:13 PM
man you don't put aluminum foil in the microwave. bottom line. put ur food in a microwave safe bowl or wrap it in a paper towel minus the foil.
5/2/2006 10:56:14 PM
^Dude, I agree--I'd never do it. But the internets say it's okay under certain circumstances.
5/2/2006 11:23:30 PM
kenmore will laugh at your assplease let us know what their reply is to your claim
5/2/2006 11:43:01 PM
Metal + Microwave = BADno matter what, it doesn't matter if it is exposed. Just don't put metal things in the microwave, it isn't a good idea at all.And Kenmore isn't gonna give you a new one unless you can lie about what happened. If you would have watched the microwave for that 30 seconds instead of going to the bathroom you would have seen something was not right, specifically electricity arcing everywhere, and stopped it before serious damage occured

this person loses.
5/3/2006 1:50:10 AM
i've heard of places having a smoke smell to the point that the only way to get rid of it was with new appliances and a remodled kitchen
5/3/2006 2:26:47 AM
you're an idiot. do you even know how nukes work and why you dont put foil in them?
5/3/2006 7:53:33 AM
That settles it.I now have a definitive answer for the question"Who is the worlds biggest dumbass?"What has this world come to? METAL + MICROVAVE = (And as far as your smoke smell, you'll probably have to scrub all the walls and wash all the furniture/upholstery/carpet. Febreeze is just going to cover it up at this point.)

^^ dumb, yes. but kinda cute too.

I was house-sitting for my brother and he neglected to tell me that his microwave made a horrible noise the last time he used it. So, I stuck a bowl of soup in there, walked away, and heard this awful scream come from the microwave. I shut it off and when I opened the door there was literally a wall of smoke in there so thick I couldn't even see the bowl of soup. Then I was like "OH NO, RADIATION!!!" and I ran away and didn't come back.Fuck house sitting. And microwaves.
5/3/2006 10:32:11 AM
you should have posted here before you microwaved - not after
5/3/2006 11:01:29 AM
....are you goddamnit retarded?
5/3/2006 11:01:33 AM
5/3/2006 11:04:03 AM
yeah, it has been said but the paper towels just allowed it to catch on fire. Without them it would have just sparked.

5/3/2006 11:21:45 AM
Wow...dumb. And then to leave the room while it is in there??
5/3/2006 11:25:01 AM
This was a good read.
5/3/2006 11:31:53 AM
ha ha ha, after i read the first post i thought to myself "please don't be from CHASS, please don't be from CHASS"I R VENDIKATED.
5/3/2006 12:04:02 PM
I still don't get what the whole wrapping it up in paper towels was supposed to do. I mean that's like trying to extinguish a fire with gas. And filing a claim isn't going to help you much unless you lie about what happened like someone else said. Usually companies don't cover negligence. But on another note, that would have been cool to watch
5/3/2006 12:15:36 PM
Someone came in my house and smoked several cigs and got a godawful smell in my house (I hate the smell of smoke). So, I bought some of this stuff...it worked really really well. It also worked in the car of my friend who smokes...I got it at the grocery store, so maybe you could find it there?
5/3/2006 12:20:44 PM
metal in the microwave won't cause a problem unless it is thin (foil) or has sharp points (also foil)[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 1:15 PM. Reason : ']
5/3/2006 1:14:36 PM
You can also play with matches while standing knee-deep in kerosene, but it's not highly recommended
5/3/2006 1:18:55 PM
that's a horrible comparisonif you light a match knee deep in kerosene, shit's probably gonna catch on fire (probably)If you put a spoon in a microwave, nothing will happen[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 1:30 PM. Reason : o]
5/3/2006 1:22:56 PM
DUMBASS - how about NOT putting foil IN the microwave at all. Go file a claim with your mother for birthing you.
5/3/2006 1:28:11 PM
The point is, sure, you can go for it, but you're really pushing your luck.[Edited on May 3, 2006 at 1:29 PM. Reason : ^what I was getting at]
5/3/2006 1:28:56 PM
It's not really pushing your luck at all if you know what you're putting in there. And unless there is something ignitable, the worst that will happen is some sparks will fly.like someone mentioned earlier, many microwaves come with metal racks inside them
5/3/2006 1:34:01 PM
5/3/2006 1:54:46 PM
We learned in PY that you can put thick metal-like a spoon- in a microwave, but not tin foil or any thin metal. But whether wrapped in paper towels or not, it would have still caught fire--not just sparked. But still, this was retarded. "I'm too lazy to unwrap it, so I'll just wrap it up more. Maybe I can trick the microwaves and they'll never know aluminum is present." [Edited on May 3, 2006 at 2:56 PM. Reason : b][Edited on May 3, 2006 at 2:56 PM. Reason : f]
