First question: Where is the money coming from for this?
5/1/2006 5:37:29 AM
They were honest questions ... please don't roll at me. Let me ask for a definition then ... what qualifies as a family?
5/1/2006 5:52:34 AM
So let me get this straight....if my family is lower middle class, I have to take on a crushing amount of student loans... but if my family is poor, I just get everything for free? Isn't that like reverse Darwinism?

5/1/2006 8:53:11 AM
yes, but do we really want the new jersey disease to spread?
5/1/2006 9:37:26 AM
wtf are we subsidizing out of state students? when they ask for alumni money in a few yearsthey can go to hell. or nj. same difference.
5/1/2006 9:51:09 AM
what is state's tuition these days?
5/1/2006 9:53:23 AM
Perlith, I think if you do some additional research, you'll find that the Pack Promise isn't that much of transition from the university's pre-existing financial aid policy. It's always been the University's policy to give to the most needy students first. When the Carolina Covenant got started, it put pressure on university to come up with a similar program...so they just took what they're already doing, made some slight adjustments and put a cute alliterative name on it.* Note: For comparisons sake, information about the Carolina Convenant: http://www.unc.edu/carolinacovenant/
5/1/2006 9:58:04 AM
*cough* RIPOFFfor once it would seem like the administration would try to do something before carolina instead of being reactive. "OH TEH HEALS DID IT SO WEE R NEED 2 TOO."
5/1/2006 10:07:38 AM
who cares? The end result is what matters here, not the pride of coming up with it.

5/1/2006 10:37:25 AM
everybody knows the middle class of America pays for everything, not the rich and the poor.
5/1/2006 10:44:32 AM
poverty is like 19k, so the figure we're looking at is less than 30kso if all of you bitching about this would like to work it out where your parents make less than 30 thousand a yearfuckin a, go aheadand
5/1/2006 10:49:45 AM
I don't hate the poor, just the system.18,999K/year = free ride.19,001K/year = screwed.I thought I supplied some figures. Our bill was in excess of 30K (figure 1). Family 2's bill was 0K (figure 2). Difference? A few K in yearly income.I dunno. Maybe if they scaled it? Less than 19K = the current free ride. Less than 25K = help on scale 1. Less than 30K = help on scale 2.[Edited on May 1, 2006 at 10:59 AM. Reason : -]
5/1/2006 10:56:39 AM
The financial aid system is scaled. The FAFSA determines how much your family has to contributes. Personally, I have no problem with giving away money to students, it's better than wasting it on other craps such as the war in Iraq. I'm not even gonna open that can of worms.

5/1/2006 11:08:51 AM
Uncle Sam coulda bought one less bomb and financed my education insteadbut hey, that's just not how America rolls ]
5/1/2006 11:09:41 AM
Why can't they do this for out-of-state students?
5/1/2006 11:13:21 AM
5/1/2006 11:17:56 AM
yea, to be eligible, you have to be an incoming freshman.
5/1/2006 11:21:47 AM
5/1/2006 11:29:26 AM
and lutrayou're from fucking georgiayou shouldn't have any comments about the out-of-state tuitionyou want cheap school, go to one of your Hope Scholarship facilities
5/1/2006 11:30:28 AM
^agreed. Hope Scholarship is very nice indeed.
5/1/2006 11:39:23 AM
I don't want to derail the thread anymore than I already have, so I'll leave it at this:-how do you know the delivery was free for this other family?Related-do you know their insurance status?None-what is your insurance status?Some-were there any complications with the delivery?No-what is their income (remember they also had 3 kids already, which definitely changes the scale)Kid 1 (read: no other kids at the time) - delivery = freeKid 2 (read: one other kid at the time) - delivery = freeKid 3 (read: two other kids at the time) - delivery = freeKid 4 (read: three other kids at the time) - delivery = free-right now you're still giving me "i hate the poor rhetoric"I don't hate people in my family. I do, however, think the system is unfair. Think what you want.
5/1/2006 11:41:12 AM
are you really suggesting the people in your family are having kids just to save moneydid you worry about money when you decided to have yours?abortions are a lot cheaper than deliveries if money is what the decision was based oni'll move this to a real quesiton thenwould you and your spouse have asked for pay cuts when you got pregnant rather than pay that 30kand you say "some"why did you have a kid without full insurance? what kind of jobs are you working?perhaps you are
5/1/2006 11:44:01 AM
^gg.

5/1/2006 11:52:59 AM
So we get a tuition jack to pay for htis?
5/1/2006 12:01:37 PM
I think the money comes from alumni endowment.
5/1/2006 12:06:50 PM
ps
5/1/2006 12:08:57 PM
^^^Part of the recent increases were related to financial aid. How exactly this fits in is probably unknown to the public. Might be able to find out if you do a bit of searching.
5/1/2006 12:11:14 PM
do they use the same criteria as the fafsahah cause if i can only use my mom i would qualify
5/1/2006 12:27:52 PM
^ If you have an EFC of 0, they generally ask for your parent's tax forms. If your mother doesn't file for head of household (and I'm sure she doesn't) then that won't fly.Personally, I think it's great that they're doing this. I get about half of my financial aid covered by NCSU (through various grants) and I know that if I hadn't been lucky enough to get a ~$7,000 scholarship, I wouldn't be in school.I will admit that stuff like this sucks for people whose parents are in the middle class range and can't really afford to send them to school even though their FAFSA says that they can. ]
5/1/2006 12:52:40 PM
it angers me that I had to join the army and take out a large amount of loans to get where I am nowand now, they just give it away to people who probably dont deserve it or recognize that education is an investment in yourselfthats probably how those idiots who went around shooting people and wearing teeth grillz got at State to begin wth
5/1/2006 12:57:50 PM
5/1/2006 1:02:07 PM
^^yeslets use stereotypes againthat makes your initial comments even more crediblethere are plenty of people who don't want to pay the army to pay for your college you're right though, a college education is an investment, unfortunately based on hindrances outside of their control they are currently less able, if not completely unable, to provide that investment. and nobody has answered my first question from this threadhow much does it cost to go to state these days?[Edited on May 1, 2006 at 1:04 PM. Reason : you fuckin' crybabies]
5/1/2006 1:02:09 PM
^^ Duhr me, I was assuming that your parents were together. If they're divorced then yes, she would be head of house hold. Sorry about that. Technically her information is all that you would have to file, even if you were getting support on the side from your dad.[Edited on May 1, 2006 at 1:05 PM. holy shit 14,000 to go to state?wow18k for campbell don't seem that bad now....
5/1/2006 1:12:10 PM
i just think its funny that i can qualify for free scholarship
5/1/2006 1:17:02 PM
This reminds me of scholarship night at my high school.I was middle class, had a 4.0, did about 30 activities during my high school career and worked 30 hours a week. I got nothing. My best friend's parents were divorced, and her mom made next to nothing. Her dad however, paid very little in child support, but bestowed upon my friend a brand new Jetta, Abercrombie clothes, and spending cash galore. She had a 3.0, was involved in not one school activity, and didnt work. She got a full ride to her school because her family (aka head of household mom) was so "poor".
5/1/2006 1:17:46 PM
5/1/2006 1:46:48 PM
Fuck this. If you're poor...work hard and get a scholarship.
5/1/2006 1:54:17 PM
5/1/2006 3:26:30 PM
["it angers me that I had to join the army and take out a large amount of loans to get where I am now"]I agree with you 100%["Uncle Sam coulda bought one less bomb and financed my education instead"]Oh yeah because that is Uncle Sam's responsibility, to pay for education
5/1/2006 3:44:07 PM
In Europe, many universities are free or cheap, with tuition running $500/year or sobut I guess America doesn't play that communist bullshit
5/1/2006 3:53:42 PM
stop being haters cause you didnt go to school for free
5/1/2006 4:07:27 PM
we are being haters because we have to pay for arrogant scumbags like you
