Thoughts about the Women and Gender Studies program and courses
1.Have you ever taken a Women and Gender Studies course?
•[Hell] No

2.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Major?
•Yes
•No
This question makes me feel uncomfortable, so I'm skipping it.

3.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Minor?
•No

4. Would you be interested in completing the Women and Gender Studies Major at NCSU?
•No

5. Would you be interested in completing the Women and Gender Studies Minor at NCSU?
•No

6. If you answered no to questions 4 and 5, are there any particular reasons?
Um, if I wanted a useless major/minor, I'd at least do it in English which is 5 or 6 steps up from womens studies.
7. Do you think that taking a Women and Gender Studies course would benefit you?
•No (skip to question 9)

8. In what way(s)?

9. Why not?
I can't see being enriched by reliving the women's rights movements of the 60s and 70s. It happened. We're equal. Lets be happy. And why isn't there a mens studies program? Oh, because that's sexist.

10. Do you believe men have a place in the Women and Gender Studies program?
•Yes (the gay ones)

11. Do you believe that the male point of view/voice has a place Women and Gender Studies classroom?
• Yes (to tell them that this course should be renamed "home ec")

12. Is the male point of view/voice necessary in a Women and Gender Studies course?
•Yes (We have to tell them how to cook right)

13. Why?

14. Since most members of the Women and Gender Studies program currently are women, would being the minority in a classroom make you uncomfortable?
• No, as long as they werent' all butches, I might like it. But that's a slim to none chance

15. Do you have any thoughts on the people you think are in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
See 14.

16. What kind of course materials do you believe are presented in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
Gina appreciation, and I am woman hear me roar

17. What activities do you think take place in a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU?
Hopefully lezbo makeout sessions (not the butchy kind though)

18. Please answer this question if you have not taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: If you were to take a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU, what would motivate you to do so?
Nothing, reall.

19. Please answer this question if you have taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: What motivated you to take a Women and Gender Studies course?

20. What do you think of when hear the word feminist?
The word feminist and nazi pushed together... feminazi

21. What do you think is a feminist?
crazy.

feminism, these days, isn't about the women's rights movement as it was manifested in the 60's and 70's

the way I experience isn't even really about "activism"

mostly its a critical lense... an expansive field of theory

I've sent my serious response via PM

1 no
2 & 3 I’ve heard of women’s studies programs in general, I’m not sure what specifically I’ve heard about for ncsu.
4 & 5 No.
6 It’s not disinteresting material, but getting 1 major in 4 years is a lot work (especially if you switched majors more than once, or had physical injuries to slow you down, or deaths in the family etc) so there isn’t time for it if you are already going for something vocational like engineering or something else that you have an even stronger interest in like philosophy.
7 Yes
8 All academic courses have a chance to show me new information. Being a CHASS major in general you still get several professors who focus a little bit on gender issues, so I don’t think women’s study’s would be that novel or deep, but I enjoy being a student so if I had the time I would have gotten something out of a women’s studies class.
9 N/A
10 Yes
11 Yes
12 NO
13 Its not necessary, but there might be something lost without balance.
14 No. Lots of CHASS classes are like that.
15 No, I haven’t knowingly met anyone who meets the criteria as I recall.
16 Probably the rolls of women through history, important women through history, women characters in literary works like Medea & Lady MacBeth, women’s rights stuff, etc
17 Probably the same stuff that goes on in a regular class room.
18 Someone else paying for the class. Women’s issues are interesting, but there are so many interesting classes at NCSU that I didn’t get to take & I’m a graduating senior, it would take someone paying for the class to bump it high enough on the list.
19 N/A
20 Someone very interested in women’s issues. (of course people think of the stereotypes used in jokes, but I think most people can distinguish between that & reality) I’ve person met people who met & others who break the stereotype, but either way that are people very interested in women’s issues. I think probably the ones who meet it just stand out more.
21 Someone very interested in women’s issues.

5. No
6. Seems like it'd appeal to women mainly.
7. Yes.
8. I love discussing gender roles and such, but I do not like the title being "Women's Studies." But don't get me wrong, I also love to study women.
10. No - only if it was called "Gender Studies" rather than "Women's Studies (and Gender Studies)"
11. No.
12. No.
13. Because the title makes it for women only.
14. Hm, I find it hard to believe there's a single class at NCSU with more women than men.
15. No.
16. No comment.
17. Discussions, papers.
18. I would take it to discuss contemporary gender roles.
20. I think of those girls you see in Brooklyn that would be happy if they woke up tomorrow and all the men in NYC were gone.
21. Realistically, perhaps someone who is conscious of the female struggle in contemporary society?

A survey with self-selected participants cannot be applied to the population at large.

It was just the topic of the project, to gauge interest and views of most males concerning the WGS program since there is such a lack of male students. Feel free to do the survey, it couldn't hurt to have something additional to add, especially from a female student not in the program.

Thoughts about the Women and Gender Studies program and courses
1.Have you ever taken a Women and Gender Studies course?
•No

2.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Major?
•No

3.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Minor?
•Yes

4. Would you be interested in completing the Women and Gender Studies Major at NCSU?
•No

5. Would you be interested in completing the Women and Gender Studies Minor at NCSU?
•No

6. If you answered no to questions 4 and 5, are there any particular reasons?
There are other subjects I'd prefer to drop spare money and credit hours on.
7. Do you think that taking a Women and Gender Studies course would benefit you?
•No (skip to question 9)

9. Why not?
I couldn't take it seriously, and it would be mainly (I suspect) because of my classmates, not necessarily the subject matter.
10. Do you believe men have a place in the Women and Gender Studies program?
•Yes

11. Do you believe that the male point of view/voice has a place Women and Gender Studies classroom?
• Yes

12. Is the male point of view/voice necessary in a Women and Gender Studies course?
•Yes

13. Why?
Variety is always beneficial in an academic setting

14. Since most members of the Women and Gender Studies program currently are women, would being the minority in a classroom make you uncomfortable?
N/A
15. Do you have any thoughts on the people you think are in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
either
a) they thought it'd be any easy class for their humanities requirements
b) feminazis
c) your garden variety vapid slut
d) a masochistic male
16. What kind of course materials do you believe are presented in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
Family issues, home ec-type stuff, juggling families and jobs, and they might touch a bit on the humanitarian plights of female populations abroad
17. What activities do you think take place in a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU?
Reading books - some good, some a waste of time, and some a waste of time and paper. "discussions", also.
18. Please answer this question if you have not taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: If you were to take a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU, what would motivate you to do so?
It's highly unlikely that I'll ever take a WGS class at NCSU. If I did, I'd probably look forward to making snide comments about my female classmates. The subject matter damn well better be something like "Female gender as a weapon abroad" or "Vaginas in combat".

20. What do you think of when hear the word feminist?
The loudest few giving the moderate majority a bad name.

21. What do you think is a feminist?
Anyone, male or female, who refuses to accept the term "fairer gender", in its traditional use, for women. That covers a lot of ground and views, and isn't too exclusionary.

Thoughts about the Women and Gender Studies program and courses
1.Have you ever taken a Women and Gender Studies course?
•No

2.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Major?
•No

3.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Minor?

4. Would you be interested in completing the Women and Gender Studies Major at NCSU?

6. If you answered no to questions 4 and 5, are there any particular reasons?

7. Do you think that taking a Women and Gender Studies course would benefit you?
•Yes (skip to question 8)

8. In what way(s)?
I find this topic to be very interesting and I am always up for learning new things about communication and the roles of women in different societies.

9. Why not?

10. Do you believe men have a place in the Women and Gender Studies program?
•Yes

11. Do you believe that the male point of view/voice has a place Women and Gender Studies classroom?
• Yes

12. Is the male point of view/voice necessary in a Women and Gender Studies course?
•Yes

13. Why?
It is important to approach a subject from as many viewpoints as possible so that those studying the subject can get the full picture and form their opinions in an educated manor.

14. Since most members of the Women and Gender Studies program currently are women, would being the minority in a classroom make you uncomfortable?
• No (I don't know if I should be answering this though, because I am a woman...I'm just bored at work and decided to take the survey anyway)

15. Do you have any thoughts on the people you think are in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU? No. I don't know enough about these individuals to form any opinions on them.

16. What kind of course materials do you believe are presented in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU? I would imagine that this major focuses on the roles of women in different societies as well as the changing roles of women in our society. Where we have come from and where we hope to be.

17. What activities do you think take place in a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU? I have no idea.

18. Please answer this question if you have not taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: If you were to take a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU, what would motivate you to do so? Two things...1) It is an interesting subject. 2)It satisfies a degree requirement.

19. Please answer this question if you have taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: What motivated you to take a Women and Gender Studies course?

20. What do you think of when hear the word feminist? I think of people who hold the opinion that women and men should treated equally rather than separated by their gender.

21. What do you think is a feminist? A person who subscribes to the opinion stated in question #20.

6. If you answered no to questions 4 and 5, are there any particular reasons?
no interest in the subject

7. Do you think that taking a Women and Gender Studies course would benefit you?
•No (skip to question 9)

9. Why not?
id likely not pay much attention and thus it would have no benefit (a key reason i wouldnt take it in the first place). im sure it has some value, but im content with basic psychology's description of gender roles and the like.

10. Do you believe men have a place in the Women and Gender Studies program?
•Yes

11. Do you believe that the male point of view/voice has a place Women and Gender Studies classroom?
• Yes

12. Is the male point of view/voice necessary in a Women and Gender Studies course?
•Yes

13. Why?
to avoid bias, just like any other major. these kinds of topics can easily sway to one side if not correctly administered.

14. Since most members of the Women and Gender Studies program currently are women, would being the minority in a classroom make you uncomfortable?
• No

15. Do you have any thoughts on the people you think are in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
no, except im not surprised that they are mostly women. men don' t have the short end of the stick (when it comes to problems stemming from gender issues) so they don't really worry about these issues as much.

16. What kind of course materials do you believe are presented in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
id imagine, about the same as any other social science.

17. What activities do you think take place in a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU?
discussions, lectures, etc.

18. Please answer this question if you have not taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: If you were to take a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU, what would motivate you to do so?
it being a requirement

19. Please answer this question if you have taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: What motivated you to take a Women and Gender Studies course?
N/A

20. What do you think of when hear the word feminist?
extremism. just like any other label, you immediately think of the most extreme types. the feminazi if you will.

21. What do you think is a feminist?
being proud of and openly supporting what makes you a woman. being aware of your inherent strengths and weakness and hopefully embracing them.

Thoughts about the Women and Gender Studies program and courses
1.Have you ever taken a Women and Gender Studies course?
•No

2.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Major?
•Yes

3.Have you heard about the Women and Gender Studies Minor?
•Yes

4. Would you be interested in completing the Women and Gender Studies Major at NCSU?
•No

5. Would you be interested in completing the Women and Gender Studies Minor at NCSU?
•No

6. If you answered no to questions 4 and 5, are there any particular reasons?
I see little to no benefit to taking such a minor or major, and what little free classes I have i'd rather spend either learning something for my career or doing something fun.

7. Do you think that taking a Women and Gender Studies course would benefit you?
•No (skip to question 9)

8. In what way(s)?

9. Why not?
I don't see why there's any reason to learn this for anyone outside perhaps the field of psycology. I dont support where the current feminism movement is going, and seeing as how I'm female I dont see how this class would teach me anything I dont already know.

10. Do you believe men have a place in the Women and Gender Studies program?
•Yes

I believe any program at NCSU should have a place for every student, regardless of gender etc etc. I think it's stupid that this question even needs to be considered. (Not stupid that you asked it however)

11. Do you believe that the male point of view/voice has a place Women and Gender Studies classroom?
• Yes

12. Is the male point of view/voice necessary in a Women and Gender Studies course?
•Yes

13. Why?
If you only hear about any group from inside the group, you get a skewed view.
If you only hear about any group from the outside, you also get a skewed view.
To understand anyone or any group you have to both understand (although not necissarily agree with), both what other think of them and what they think of themselves.
it's far too easy to fall into extreeme and frankly, stupid, viewpoints if you dont balance your sources.

14. Since most members of the Women and Gender Studies program currently are women, would being the minority in a classroom make you uncomfortable?
N/A to the WGS program.
However I'm a female in CSC. No, being a minority doesnt bug me.

15. Do you have any thoughts on the people you think are in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
a. extreeme feminists.
b. girls who take easy courses (I'll refrain from commenting on my biased belief on why)
c. feminine guys. (gay or straight whatever)
d. possibly buisness majors who want to be managers regardless of gender

16. What kind of course materials do you believe are presented in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
Women's rights in this country and abroad.
Inequality in the workplace, military, etc what have you.
The difference between genetically being a woman and identifying as female in "gender" per se.
History of women's rights/freedoms/duties.
current popular topics related to women (Abortion, etc)

17. What activities do you think take place in a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU?
Books. Papers, Tests, discussions.

18. Please answer this question if you have not taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: If you were to take a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU, what would motivate you to do so?

An easy A, Pissing off some sororirty girls, attempting to be a voice of sanity and logic. Pointing out how extreeme feminism is anything but equal and it's quite hypocritical.

19. Please answer this question if you have taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: What motivated you to take a Women and Gender Studies course?

20. What do you think of when hear the word feminist?
"what kind of feminist are we talking about? If this is a nutcase I'm going to be pissed, if they're not, i'm interested in listening"

21. What do you think is a feminist?
Anyone promoting womens rights or supposed "equality" for women, either actively by protesting or passivly doing something else. I feel myself to be a feminist for daily proving myself the equal of my male classmates and peers, even though I have quite a few reservations about where the movement seems to be going, and disagree with quite a few other feminists on many points.
There's a wide range of views and degrees of vocalness, not to mention degrees of extreemism. Many arent, many are.

why do so many CSC folks think that the humanities are "easy A" courses?

I have a feeling that you wouldn't find the class so easy if you were to actually take it

I never got less than an A in any of my humanities classes. And I'm in CSC.

Perhaps that's why they're easy.

goddamnit... I get so sick and tired of people telling me that what I do is easy

especially when most people couldn't pull it off half as well as me

its true that the liberal arts can be as easy as you choose to make them
however, it goes the other way too

and if you ever want to get published you have to bust ass to get there

^ I'm guessing 200 level classes at NCSU

[Edited on April 27, 2006 at 4:16 PM. Reason : -200 level classes at State, I always felt, were dumbed down a bit]

This is usually the truth, especially if the essay topic is broad and you have discussed it in class a lot. Sometimes they are difficult if you get a very narrow topic to write on.

But not all humanities classes are the same, there are easy ones and hard ones, just like math and engineering classes.

Gender Studies is a multidisciplinary field

your answer is yes but I don't feel like going into why

Even being a humanities guy myself, I don't see that much merit in a multidisciplinary study as a major. Sure as a minor it is good, but really what career (or graduate program) does it prepare you for?

I think having majors like Women's studies and African American studies cheats people out of getting real preparation for life.

i cant really see there being a significant market for gender studies majors

7. Do you think that taking a Women and Gender Studies course would benefit you?
•Yes (skip to question 8)

8. In what way(s)?
well possibly, i typically enjoy learning about new issues and perspectives.

9. Why not?

10. Do you believe men have a place in the Women and Gender Studies program?

11. Do you believe that the male point of view/voice has a place Women and Gender Studies classroom?
• Yes

12. Is the male point of view/voice necessary in a Women and Gender Studies course?

• No

15. Do you have any thoughts on the people you think are in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
I don't really understand how it works as a major. I can understand the need and demand for courses, but I don't understand why anyone would major in this.

16. What kind of course materials do you believe are presented in Women and Gender Studies courses at NCSU?
I would assume that various articles and essays and scholarly journals are used.

Angry women that dwell on their problems and place blame on others. I think of militant angry women and not a more accurate picture.

Someone who is concerned with womens rights

Females may take this as well, since many still wanted to have input, I decided to make a section in the report for the female opinion.

wtg, im sure he meant 200 lvl humanities. i dont beleive they are easy A's. i got a B+ once (maybe 2x) in my various sociology, psychology, etc electives. i dont read the book though, so thats mostly if they throw in those trick questions.

i guarantee you could get a lot more out of those electives than i did if you tried, but lets not front; humanities are a lot easier for engineering majors than the other way around.

^agreed there. Yes, I took 200 level humanities courses. But there were people majoring in that shit struggling. I took PS205 and didn't even buy the book and got an A+. I took some harder humanities. EC301 and EC302, EC305, EC340 (econ minor). Didn't breeze through those but they were a HELL OF A LOT easier than my 300 and 400 CSC courses.

depends on the kind of humanities & the kind of non humanities course you are taking. some physics classes, like the astronomies are ridiculously easy as are some intro engineering classes. some 200 level humanities, like medieval philosophy, can be challenging.

My humanities courses: Modern American History, Modern European History, Intro to American Government, Intro to Philosophy, Intro to Economics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Financial Markets and Institutions, History and Technology, Free Market Analysis.

I found them all with the exception of Macro and Micro to be extremely easy.

•No (skip to question 9)

8. In what way(s)?

9. Why not?
I can't see being enriched by reliving the women's rights movements of the 60s and 70s. It happened. We're equal. Lets be happy. And why isn't there a mens studies program? Oh, because that's sexist.

Nothing, reall.

19. Please answer this question if you have taken a Women and Gender Studies course at NCSU: What motivated you to take a Women and Gender Studies course?

20. What do you think of when hear the word feminist?
The word feminist and nazi pushed together... feminazi
