"The following article appeared in the well respected Finland newspaper, Ammenusastia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"As a communist I don’t believe in heaven or the Bible but as a scientist I now believe in hell," said Dr. Azzacove. "Needless to say we were shocked to make such a discovery. But we know what we saw and we know what we heard. And we are absolutely convinced that we drilled through the gates of hell!"

Dr. Azzacove continued, ". . .the drill suddenly began to rotate wildly, indicating that we had reached a large empty pocket or cavern. Temperature sensors showed a dramatic increase in heat to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit."

"We lowered a microphone, designed to detect the sounds of plate movements down the shaft. But instead of plate movements we heard a human voice screaming in pain! At first we thought the sound was coming from our own equipment."

"But when we made adjustments our worst suspicions were confirmed. The screams weren’t those of a single human, they were the screams of millions of humans!" "

and other interesting information......

"In Mark 9:46, Jesus Christ says about hell: "Where THEIR WORM dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.""

"Scientists recently discovered cracks on the ocean floor where fire was leaking out. Do you know what they found around these fire-breathing vents in the crust? Eight-foot long worms, found no other place in the world! The book, The Deep Sea, by Joseph Wallace (p.39), reads, "Perhaps the strangest of ocean creatures recently discovered are Riftia, the giant tube WORMS. Measuring up to 8 feet in length, the worms are ONLY FOUND NEAR DEEP SEA VENTS."

"Revelation 14:10 says, " . . . and he shall be tormented with fire and BRIMSTONE . . ." And Job 18 describes the " . . . PLACE of him that knoweth not God" (vs 21), in verse 15 as, " . . . BRIMSTONE shall be scattered upon his habitation." Do you know what brimstone is? It's sulfur. And do you know where sulfur or brimstone is found? INSIDE THIS EARTH! According to the book Volcanoes by Pierre Kohler (p. 43), when Mt. St Helens erupted in 1980 — 150,000 tons of sulfurous gas was ejected! Job is the oldest book in the Bible, written over 3,000 years ago, and yet Job knew what science wouldn't know for years — inside this earth is BRIMSTONE!

not directly, there are cycles of rebirth until you reach Moksha (aka heaven).

indirectly, yes. being born many times over into never-ending suffering can be seen as "hell" on a short enough timeline. there is also a type of purgatory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naraka

long story short:

the most important thing to understand about hinduism is that, at a fundamental level the Hindus don't pay great importance to the literal meaning of scriptures, but rather, to the metaphorical and philosophical meanings hidden behind those words (paraphrased from wiki).

we're just better scientists and mathematicians than we are conquerors and facists. the spirit of the law is ALWAYS greater than the letter of the law. tolerance for ambiguity is vital, and faith does exist, but is based on "understanding" not "doctrine". for example, the letter of the law is that the atom is the smallest unit of matter...until you discover the electron...until you discover the neutrino...and so on. think of it as an algorithm or a protocol.

also, the notion of Karma lets you have moral relativism without being morally bankrupt. matter of fact with this concept, you're enabled to use your conscience to quantify your good deeds vs. bad deeds. its a tougher situation to be in because you can't wake up one day and just have all your sins be erased by virtue of a prayer. you have to put some real effort into it.

That would explain why over half the world's nobel prizes are awarded to Indians...

"you're enabled to use your conscience to quantify your good deeds vs. bad deeds"

This sounds a bit utilitarian on an individual level with all the standard objections that entails.

As one who believes the Bible, I know that the eternal destiny of people is either
Heaven or Hell.

Do you believe that Hell is just a "metaphor" as well and does not exist?

This accout suggests otherwise...

Several years ago a book was published, entitled Beyond Death's Door by Dr. Maurice Rawlings. Dr. Rawlings, a specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, resuscitated many people who had been clinically dead. Dr. Rawlings, a devout atheist, "considered all religion "hocus-pocus" and death nothing more than a painless extinction". But something happened in 1977 that brought a dramatic change in the life of Dr. Rawlings! He was resuscitating a man, terrified and screaming — descending down into the flames of hell:

"Each time he regained heartbeat and respiration, the patient screamed, "I am in hell!" He was terrified and pleaded with me to help him. I was scared to death. . . Then I noticed a genuinely alarmed look on his face. He had a terrified look worse than the expression seen in death! This patient had a grotesque grimace expressing sheer horror! His pupils were dilated, and he was perspiring and trembling — he looked as if his hair was "on end."
Then still another strange thing happened. He said,"Don't you understand? I am in hell. . . Don't let me go back to hell!" . . .the man was serious, and it finally occurred to me that he was indeed in trouble. He was in a panic like I had never seen before."
(Maurice Rawlings, Beyond Death's Door,(Thomas Nelson Inc., 1979) p. 3).

Dr. Rawlings said, no one, who could have heard his screams and saw the look of terror on his face could doubt for a single minute that he was actually in a place called hell!

another thing...

As a Hindu, I very strongly believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and that he died for our sins.

Its just that I don't think that was the one and only time God came down here to fix stuff. Rama and Krishna were also incarnations of the divine being (incarnations of Vishnu of the holy trinity).

Does that mean I'm going to hell? To avoid hell, must I believe that God came down and fixed stuff only one time, and revealed himself to one group of people in the desert?

Unless you are a Catholic. Then there's purgatory. They believe that all are saved...of course there are a lot more details than that.

"As a Hindu, I very strongly..."

what do hindu's think of the greco-roman gods (a religion older than Christianity) that were mainstream in western civilization for thousands of years and still have some followers today?

I had the kykos apollons, a revivalist group, in mind specifically when I said that, but here’s something I just found on wikipedia.
Many neo-pagan religious paths, such as Wicca, use aspects of ancient Greek religions in their practice; Hellenic polytheism focuses exclusively thereon, as far as the fragmentary nature of the surviving source material allows. It reflects neo-Platonic speculation (which is represented in Porphyry, Libanius, and Julian), as well as Classical cult practice.
The overwhelming majority of modern Greeks are Greek Orthodox, although there is a growing minority of people following the ancient Greek religion, especially among the educated classes. According to church estimates, they are around 40,000 out of a population of 10 million. It makes them a much larger group than Greek Jews, who currently number around 5,000.
But followers of the ancient religion isn’t limited to people living in the Hellenic Republic (I believe that’s Greek’s actual official name) so the number is higher than 40 k I’d imagine.

Greco-Roman gods had very similar origins/were very similar metaphors to the early Vedic gods. What do I think of them? I think they were extremely useful symbols in their respective times.

...but had no idea they had followers today.

^^no, anyone who remembers the first thread about this (and is aware of your inability to stop being a pain in the ass about salisburyboy) clearly recognizes you as the troll.

I'm just taking the laissez-faire approach, as I try to do, and waiting to see if someone--somehow--posts something worthwhile.
