Once again, the company I work for needs co-ops for the summer. I'm not the official channel, but I have gotten 2 people hired almost immediately, and am looking to do pretty much the same thing this time. there are at least 2 positions open: System on a Chip where they need somebody familiar with verilog and python(java) to write test cases to prove a MAC architecture. requires at least having ece406 under your belt.LT hardware design group, I currently work in this group, position involves working with bleeding edge technology and the best oscilloscopes and other tools money can buy. Very hands on, you will get out of this group whatever effort you put into it. should have at least 211/212 under your belt preferably 302/303. Resume's should include GPA and courses completed(including this semester). in your coverletter describe what kind of projects you have done on your own and in class.PM me with your courses completed. and I'll give the email address to send your resume to

http://www.alcatel.com/products/productsummary.jhtml?repositoryID=/com/en/appxml/opgproduct/alcatel7342tcm228248201635.jhtmlhopefully that link will work, but thats the company and thats the current product we're working on. Great place to work, fun people exciting technology, pretty building(random but important).they don't have full time positions, just co-ops. Co-ops are used as entry level engineers throughout the building. so you can get a lot of responsibility once you prove yourself worthy of handling it. but that would be hard to do in the summer

doesn't matter, its spectacular experience that will put you WAAAAYYYYY ahead of anybody else when it comes time to fill out a resume... B/c unlike a lot of companies (IBM cisco, etc) they actually put the co-ops to work doing real tasks. I'll admit a TI/Intel/ADI intern will look better though... but this is LOCALI've gone many many places and a lot further than I ever dreamed possible b/c of my Co-op at alcatel.[Edited on April 20, 2006 at 7:41 PM. Reason : ok so there are better companies to put down on a resume... but they aren't local]

i was just making a joke that the reason they put co-ops to work is because they fire everyone that has a real job

You guys are getting worked up over nothing hahahaha, this is greatJon - You're ME and your grades are too lowBobby - You're employed full time , and probably already log 50+ hrs a week . Do you really want to co-op with an engineering degree?

my Cisco reference might have been hasty and misleading... I'm just jealous b/c they pay better but for real, the people that I know that have worked for cisco typically get a lot of hands on networking experience, like putting together a customers solution and trying to recreate failure conditions... really good for a networking background... but for a solid hardware design position Alcatel has a lot more to offer.so in actuality it all depends on what you want to do when you grow up... design hardware, build networks or write software and then blame 3rd parties for flaky equipment (*caugh* cisco *caugh* as I toured their inovation lab that was their excuse for anything that wouldn't work properly...) besides... we welcome the cisco rejects... (I never had a prayer in undergrad at working there... ) Alcatel always hires last minute...

Ok, lemme rephrase what I said earlier...What you do at any co-op is a matter of luck of the draw and what you put into it. This varies from department to department too inside a company. So my sweeping generalization was a bad one and I appologize. I've worked at 2 different places as a co-op, and largely what I was given to, and allowed to do came about b/c I showed interest and a lot of innitiative to where I was trusted with bigger tasks. Sometimes these bigger tasks aren't available and there is nothing to do. Othertimes a co-op hasn't proven trustworthy enough to be assigned a real task. The R&D group at alcatel is extremely laid back, you may not do anything for a month, at which time you can choose to look over peoples shoulders and ask them what they are doing and learn something. or you can surf the net all day long. Looking over peoples shoulders is going to turn up interesting work for you to do, surfing the web is going to make you seem uninterested and lazy. This lull is due to the nature of a design cycle, during a board bring up period it gets really busy.I think we have the LT hardware spot filled, the FPGA development one is still open.
