If it was pure ice, i'm guessing it was atmospheric and not cosmic. If it were cosmic, it would have been dirty with space dust and mirco-meteoroids. Could be something like super hail...you get some big hail that through the power of a tornado gets ejected into the upper atmosphere on a low orbit where it picks up more ice then eventually slows down and falls.Hey, it could happen.
4/11/2006 11:07:10 AM
the synoptic setup over california isnt condusive for hail formation of that magnitude
4/11/2006 11:08:59 AM
My astronomy professor knows a little bit about meteorology & plenty about space… maybe he’ll address this today in class… he’s usually pretty on top of current events.

the flash of light is evidence of atmospheric entry and leads me to beleive it had to have been a piece of a comet. theres no way it was hail. hail is allowed by a strong updraft holding it up for a long time. there was no strong updraft (severe weather) in the area. the moment the hail leaves the area of strong updraft it falls to the ground. chunks of ice this big cant just float around in the atmoshphere and randomly fall with a flash of light. also. if it was hail it would've been the largest hailstone ever and the current largest one was clearly two that meshed together during a really intense supercell in the central plains.
4/11/2006 5:36:13 PM
^I like the comet idea...but you have to remember that when an object reenters the earth's atmosphere, it comes into contact with very intense heat...The chunk of ice would been melted in seconds, unless it was VERY VERY VERY large to start with... or if it was encased in a harder substance, such as rock and such...and that melted away leaving the ice behind. That is possible, considering the general idea of a comet is a "dirty snowball"....
4/11/2006 6:34:43 PM
THOSE DAMN DIRTY APES
4/11/2006 7:44:28 PM

Somewhere, someone in a flying delorean is laughing their ass off.
4/12/2006 11:10:57 AM
"One expert says sometimes big balls of ice just fall from the sky without any explanation." Where did they dig this guy up. He sounds like a expert on all kinds of things. Possibly they got him from the bum camp in Garner, flew him in for his expert opinion.
4/12/2006 11:17:39 AM
That's a space peanut.
4/12/2006 12:06:16 PM
Just another reason not to live in California.
4/12/2006 1:14:01 PM
sorry, i dug a hole and burried my ice cube in it.
4/12/2006 1:35:23 PM
that sure would be a sorry way to go... crushed by an unexplained giant ice cube
4/12/2006 1:44:38 PM
i bet it was some sort of chunk of ice that accumulated through condensation on an airplane, and finally fell off.
4/12/2006 2:32:25 PM
pretty sure it would have to be a comet...it would have to be substantially HUGE though to take all the heat form entry...about the size of a large house or bigger. The rock on the outside could melt and just leave the ice from a somewhat molten core...but then we are left with the explanation of to where this cosmic water came from??
4/12/2006 2:38:57 PM
^sounds like my theorycame from the Oort Cloud of course
4/12/2006 2:40:58 PM
god drinks scotch?
4/12/2006 2:42:33 PM
it was not a comet.
4/12/2006 2:56:56 PM
maybe a big chunk of debris from a comet..obviously it wasn't a whole comet...i'm starting to believe the whole thing was a hoax
4/12/2006 3:07:10 PM
comets aren't made of 'pure ice' like it was said this thing was made of.
4/12/2006 5:20:40 PM
and you think that astronomers aren't aware of huge things the size of a house floating around in space? Of course they'd pick up something that big making entry. No, I'm still going with a meteorology explaination.
4/12/2006 5:25:18 PM
jebus sneezed
4/12/2006 5:25:23 PM
i'm still guessing that it was some ice that for some reason built up on the outside of an airplane that fell off.
4/12/2006 5:40:32 PM
being a meteorology guy i know its not meteorology. and to everone that says it wasnt from space howo do you explain the flash of light? the hoax theory makes the most sense.
4/13/2006 3:21:34 AM
4/13/2006 3:42:42 AM
4/13/2006 5:06:53 AM
It is impossible for it to be a comet. An object the density of ice traveling at comet speeds would make a way way way bigger hole than its actual size. It had to come from within our own atmosphere to be traveling at speeds that would produce the described impact. I'm thinking Smath's "ice build up on a plane" theory is a pretty good guess.Maybe it was the man on the grassy knoll?[Edited on April 13, 2006 at 5:11 AM. Reason : my first thought was "hoax]
4/13/2006 5:10:02 AM
4/13/2006 12:33:21 PM
4/13/2006 1:31:17 PM
yeah, and the "explosion" was probably just the noise it made on impact.[Edited on April 13, 2006 at 2:00 PM. Reason : unless it was that supersonic ice y0]
4/13/2006 1:59:50 PM
ice would reflect sunlight as it was falling, which would look like a streak of light
