Dont know much about cameras but with what research I've done, this one looks like the best bet for my price range. Anyone owned one? Any other brands worth checkin out?

I own it and used it extensively during my five month stay in Europe.

Outstanding versatility and probably the best-in-class video options. The IS works pretty well, but like many prosumers the S2 takes a bit of a hit in low-light situations (I prefer not to use the flash, so it hurts me more). You shouldn't ever use it at ISO 400. This is true for a lot of cameras, but people tend to compain when they can't get instant sharp pictures right out of the box. As with any camera, the more shots you take the more you'll know how to get the most out of the camera.

No physical, mechanical, or software problems whatsoever with it though. The user interface is very intuitive and easy to use.

Other similar cameras include the Sony H1 and the Panasonic-Lumix FZ5. From what I hear, it really boils down to between the S2 IS and FZ5.

my in-law's have the IS and let us use it when we went to hawaii. very sharp camera. i'd recommend it.

We have about 5 different cameras in our engineering dept at work and the S2 IS is always the first one I try and sign out when I am going out in the field to take some pictures or doing some macro photography. The flip out screen is very helpful taking pictures in tight places--and working in a power plant, there are lots of tight places

All the frog photos in my gallery are taken with one, it has a superb macro. especially for a digital in its price range. I simply love this camera, works very well as a camcorder as well. I've taken a few really good videos of my snakes eating with it. Good sound quality and picture.
