how does someone go about doing this? after much thinking, i figure i'd rather just test out of french 101 and 102 instead of starting over in a language such as spanish. i could maybe double major then, and that'd be pretty sweet.

so does anyone know who to talk to about testing out, when you can do it, and most importantly, how difficult it is?

I had Bell for FL 102 and 201...shes really good and nice, but i dont think she teaches 101...not sure

Try going to the computer lab, upstairs in the Laundry building. That's where they administer all the foreign language placement tests. I don't believe you need an appointment, just walk in and take it.

It's a computer adaptive test (sort of like the current GRE). When you're doing well, the questions get harder, and when you miss, they get easier - it's trying to find your comfortable level.

I took it way back when during orientation and after two years of high school spanish placed into 201. If it's been a while, it's probably worth it to study.

i tested into an advanced spanish class, but not quite far enough to meet my requirement for foreign languages. i tried starting to take the class, but decided to fall back and go from 101 up just so i could get a real grasp of the language, instead of the minimal class work option. I think I pulled like 2 A's and a B over my 3 spanish courses in stead of doing only 1 or 2 classes where I would have had a lower grade. I'm glad I went the way I did.

Mostly this is a warning though, unless you place past all your requirements, I feel that those tests can place people too far ahead to do well in the classes to which they are assigned.

No, you cannot take it more than once (ie, keep taking and taking and taking it to see if you place out). If there is significant reason to warrant a second testing, fine, but to retake just to try and place higher or out without any significant change in your preparation, situation, etc.. is probably a waste of time.

For any class higher than 101, you should take the placement test to gauge your level. It might be accurate (usually it is) , it might be a bit high- as Supplanter mentioned, depending on how you learn language and other factors.

Take the test and do the language classes as needed. A few good grades never hurt anyone's GPA

TRACs does not check for pre-requisites. You could sign up for a graduate level class and would not stop you. You can stay in the 110, but the prof will probably ask for proof of placement into it. So stopping by and taking the test sometmie before you walk into the class would be a good idea.

When I did orientation (granted, that was back before the dawn of time) you had to be quite adamant for them to let you take it then and not wait until you arrived in the fall. Of course, if you know you need through 201 for CHASS coming in, you're willing to stand around and argue about it - but it took effort and if it hadn't been for some older students coaching me on that I definately wouldn't have taken it during orientation.

they offered to let you take it during orientation, but either one of two things happened at the same time. it was either one of those times you had multiple options of things to do, and that probably wasn't the most attractive offer, or you could actually take a break during the time.

I took the placement test in my first semester here for German, placed into FLG202. The placement was pretty appropriate, and the test was, as mentioned, computer-based. Don't remember having to make an appointment, but this was way back in '98, so...
