So making my very first D or F is a very real possibility this semester...it would be in CH 223 with Novak. I'm a bio major. How detrimental to my future plans is this really...I hoped to get into grad school someday...my GPA is good now...and probably wont drop much if I did get a D or an F because I have so many hours.

what are your grades in Novak? cuz i can tell you...i had a 55 average in 221 with him....and got a C. .as the class average was a 59...so....he curves like whoa.

class avg is 65 right now...im a considerable amount below that...further below the average than you were.

My fiancee is doing graduate work in molecular plant sciences and hasn't touched organic since she took it. Her biochemistry knowledge is ridiculous though. It REALLY depends on what your concentration/field of study will be as to how important the course will be.

Also, it looks like from your degree audit, you are allowed to make a D in Organic Chemistry and have it count. Don't sweat it too much ... a single bad grade on a degree audit MIGHT lower your GPA by 0.03. If you continue to have difficulty in more advanced courses (MB351, BCH451), then you might want to talk to an advisor. Most of us usually have a single bad course/bad semester ... move on and enjoy life.

I empathize. I'm just about failing my first grad class in Math, but I'm taking six classes, half of which are grad.

I don't know what to say really, but my advisor said "one bad grade" won't make all the difference in grad school applications.

the key is to explain (but don't make an excuse for) the reason you got such a low grade in your personal statement. you could also take the Chemistry GRE (or another subject GRE if you're going into another field) to prove that you know the material. also, do really well on the regular GRE.

i was in a similar situation as skyfallen...had about a 55 avg and ended up w/ a C - i'm not sure if its too late for this but make sure ur presence is known in class, go talk to him, and go to any test reviews he might have - i think me acting like i was trying helped out alot

The professor I work for failed organic chemistry the first time he took it in undergrad. I wouldn't sweat it too badly.

Realize that (from my experience with the process) it's much better to have a pretty good GPA and relevant research experience than to have a fantastic GPA and no research experience, if you're looking at the life sciences for grad school.

here's what you do. the drop date is passed. however, if you talk to the teacher, you can still drop the class with departmental approval. if you are planning on getting a job after u graduate, i wouldn't worry about it that much, but if you are even thinking about going to grad school, there is no way this will help.

i dropped a calc 2 class around april 2nd-5th last year because i was doing terrible and had the worst teacher of all time.

You can still get this class dropped - it just requires a good amount of talking your way through it and explaining your situation(basically make up some bs) and i can promise you can still get this dropped

I pulled a D my freshman fall semester (didn't use freshman retake b/c I really didn't want to retake that class), combined with being sick alot, I had around 2 as my gpa. I'm a 4th year senior now and have like 3.1 or 3.2 overall gpa and a 3.5 major gpa with normal grades. One bad grade wont kill you. Also as I've recently learned, even without great grades you can go for post-bach studies, or work in a related field, and all kinds of things to make grad school a reasonable possiblity even if it would otherwise fall through b/c of GPA.

Although with grad school there are no guarentees. It sucks that there is a possibility that no matter how hard you work, things wont work out. But only 1 bad grade puts you in the probably will get in category.

Just be sure to get As and Bs from now on and you should be alright I think
(I didn't do too hot in CH 223 over the summer as a micro major, and I switched out of it, not saying you gotta do anything that drastic but it was a wake up call for me that I didn't enjoy it)
