So when I got home from work my internet was extremely slow, also tried connecting to other computers on our house network and it wouldn't work, internet explorer, firefox, and coreftp all experienced the slowdownSometimes I can fix the problem by disabling and re-enabling the network card under the "network connections" window. Other times I need to reboot, sometimes multiple times, before it works back at full speed.Problem seems to develop after several hours of idle time regardless of what programs are left running. I've done the obvious and scanned for viruses and spyware using the most up to date definition files. Also uninstalled Adobe Reader which I remember it trying to update and having some issue near the time I started having the network slowdown problem.Upload speed doesn't seem to be affected, only download. Suggestions?

unless the computers all have the same configuration, or if one of them has a worm, the fact that they're all effected points to something else.have you tried a different router/switch?Try transfering a large file from one computer to another accross your local network. If the slowdown occurs here it might point to your router/switch.have you tried connecting directly to the modem? Have you tried rebooting the modem when the slow down occurs?Loose cables? I'd check all these things to see if you can narrow it down to a single source on your network.

I ran the same speed test from DSL reports on my laptop (connected to the same network, but over wireless-g instead of hard wired) right after the low score with the desktop and scored somewhere in the 500kb/sec download rate and 40 kb/second upload rate. Also none of my roommates have complained about the internet being slow for them.

any of them using bittorrent?

No, I'm the only one that uses any kind of p2p network (via Shareaza) and I keep that shut down unless I am using it. Also none of my tasks looked suspect, maybe one of you guys will recognize something:

so we've isolated to your PC only?

I haven't tested my roommates' computers but my laptop works fine, after work, I'll try my old win 2k laptop and see if it is affected too. It seems to be isolated to my comptuer

haven't had the problem in 2 days, maybe uninstalling acrobat was the key... it never seems to update itself correctly on my computer
