i have a night wedding to go to next weekend, and i'm going to need a hotel room for at least saturday night. i don't want to stay somewhere ghetto. any suggestions?

oh the wedding is at the life & science musuem and my bf's family lives near guess rd/carver st, so i don't want to stay clear across town from that area.

The Heart of Durham Hotel

i'm still jealous of how well my friend's shots turned out of that place right before they tore it down.

in fact, i should try to get some screengrabs from the footage i took

A word from captain obvious, don't stay in Durham. I mean, unless you like the a smattering of gunfire in the background from time to time. Ah sweet sweet durham, what a lovely place.

i think i am OK with the purpetuation(sp?) of negative Durham stereotypes because it means that the year I spent living in downtown Durham made me hardcore

typically with a night wedding the wedding party will be staying somewhere also - stay in the same place

i have spent plenty of nights in durham and i survived...everyone makes it out to be so ghetto, i mean i know its kinda bad, but still not as dramatic as it always sounds...there are a lot of hotels right there off guess rd near 85 i think there is a holiday inn, also carver street connects to hillandale and i think there are a couple hotels on that road too...one is a Hampton Inn

There aren't any in the area of the museum of life and science - The closest would probably be downtown.

In the Downtown area, check out the Marriott at the Civic Center 201 Foster St, or try Millennium Hotel 2800 Campus Walk Ave

There are a couple of Bed and Breakfast Inns in the area and there are plenty of nicer hotels toward the RTP area.

Ok, what the hell. I have lived in Durham for 13 years, never seen a gang member or anyone with a gun. None of our cars have ever gotten broken into, nothing of ours has ever ben stolen, and I have never felt unsafe anywhere, and I went to public school.

It's not that big of a deal. Get over the stereotype.

As for the question, the Millennium Hotel off of 15-501 is pretty nice/inexpensive.
There is a Hilton on Hillsborough Road.

The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club is superb, but pricey.

I just remembered, there's a relatively new Holiday Inn Express at Guess and 85. I can get my state employee discount there.

^^ geez, i had a sheltered south durham life and even i knew kids in gangs and had friends and family get cars broken into and friends killed. i only really felt unsafe once, but thats cause i was driving my dads car in east durham late at night.

[Edited on March 20, 2006 at 11:15 PM. Reason : but durham isnt all ghetto]

^^^I live near Guess Rd and Carver St (born and raised in Durham).
I consider it a decent neighborhood...but even then within half a mile of my house I can remember 2 rapes, at least 5 B&E, drug busts, many many acts of vandalism, and the friday before last xmas my parent's car was stolen from our driveway.

Stereotypes don't develop out of nowhere
