I've been to the Sunset Beach Resort in MoBay plenty of times, it's nice I'll say. Not as nice as Wyndham or Ritz-Carlton, but there's tons going on there all the time, although it gets pretty crowded during peak travel season. Ahem, if you're into nude beaches, they have one of their own which is wayyyyy nicer than the ones in Negril.

Nope, no serious water activities for me since I was pretty blitzed each time I've been there. As far as gambling, they have slot machines, nothing major Vegas style. Food at the buffet is good, drinks are free, what more do you need

Well if you really want to gamble, try Coral Cliff on the hip strip, but then again they are just one shade better than Sunset, slot machines and some more. But the good thing is, Coral is bang across the street from JB's Margaritaville, which is a lot of fun since cruise ships stop there all the time and there is this constant influx of hot people And right around the corner from them is Dr's Cave beach (which is either free or very cheap to get in), and lots of possibilities for water activites there.

Best time of the year...dunnow, just avoid May through September, it gets really really hot.

i've been to the dominican 3 times and i've covered the whole country, punta cana is pretty outstanding, though oscar de la renta's stretch of private beach > resorts

when i've been at resorts, i've stayed at the more expensive ones, but my brother just got back from a trip to the allegro and he loved it

oh and it's a pretty developed country as those things go, i spent a week in santo domingo just hanging out and it feels pretty much "normal" by our standards - it's different like being in europe is different, there are just some glaring reminders that you're in a developing nation

funny you mention it, i did manage to score some champange on the afternoon

and some rum the head of Barcelo

i didn't get the rolls treatment on that trip...had to settle for an escalade sammy sosa gave the president and/or a helicopter

needless to say the whole trip left a pretty positive impression on me

i went to punta cana just a couple weeks ago, we stayed at the melia caribe tropical resort. this was the first time i'd ever been anywhere tropical like that - so i can't compare it to jamaica. but i had a great time, the dominicans were great - very friendly and eager to please.

we didn't really travel much outside the resort area - we went out one day on a snorkeling excursion which was cool. you can't snorkel off the beach really - there is nothing to see - so you have to go w/ some group out on a boat to a reef. the beach is pretty long - 10 miles i think so there are a lot of resorts right there together but the beach was never packed at all.

there are a lot of things though to do outside the resorts - we went through a travel agency, so they had several of packages/excursions you could choose from. some were for a whole day, some half. we just did a half a day and spent the rest of our time going back and forth between the pool and beach.

if you are looking for a lot of night life though - punta cana is not for you. but if you want just a relaxing vacation, it's perfect. also - at our resort there were water activities you could do off the beach - kayaking, windsurfing, paddle boat which was all included at the resort.
