i'm looking for a TJ, and i really want one with a D44, but if i find a deal i can't turn down on a jeep with a D35, I'll prob go for it. I'll be interested if you still have it and will sell it for the right price, but I'm in no hurry to buy another Jeep--I'm just gonna wait until I can really steal one from somebody.

looking for TJs with a D44 is a pain. According to the dealer, there is no way to determine it via the VIN...only by looking at it, or if they happen to still have the invoice (which, of course, no one does).

I can tell the difference by looking, but I'm not gonna drive around and look at every single good deal I find on a Jeep, when the odds are very much against it having the 44. Most people are so automotively illiterate that they don't know what they have, and can't tell the difference even if you describe over the phone what to look for.

the only thing I can think of is to buy a Jeep off of an offroading web forum, where people are likely to know a little about their vehicles...but then you're looking at getting a truck that's been constantly thrashed.

wait

you're going to lock up a D35?

Don't they break enough on their own?

^^^i couldn't find anything about that, except it looks like that'll be the case for the new Wrangler when it comes out.

if you are, in fact, correct, do you know if that also holds true for the Sport, or is it just the Sahara?

sales code "DRK" signifies D44...haven't found any way to figure out if there is any way to associate VIN or packages like "towing package" with that.

I'd sell you mine in a month, but...

doesn't work for me. I'm going to buy the "run till sold" autotrader ad and hold out for top dollar.

^^ why do you need it with the 44 in it? you can get an 8.8 and get it swapped, it's def. stronger than the tj 44. i'm still looking for the info for ya tho.

ok, took that stuff out bc i found some conflicting info. i'll let u know if i figure it out

the 4 cylinder models (se) never had them

if the jeep has a trac-lock it is a dana 44.

^^yeah, that's what i'm doing with my S2000. actually, i think my price (24.5k) is plenty fair, but I'll be pretty happy with that, and don't really intend to take anything less...I have the run-until-sold ad, and will wait it out as long as I need to.

^I'm planning on either locking it or at least going limited slip, with 33" MTs and the 4.0. Nothing really crazy or anything, and the 35 would prob be ok, but wouldn't you think that's kinda pushing the limits of the D35?

and I had a 4cyl YJ...I have no interest in another 4 cyl Jeep. they're fine around town, but my YJ had 31" rubber, and it topped out in the low-to-mid 80s...which pretty much means WOT if you're on the interstate. Plus, I don't want another sucky AX-5 tranny (I blew up my old one at 115k miles).

oh, and I don't really have the desire to go to the trouble of swapping a ford axle in. even if i did, i don't feel like buying a welder and a sawzall, and while I'm sure I could do it, it would be pushing the limits of my abilities enough that it would take me a while, and I just don't have the time for that kind of thing while I'm down here in flight school (and the Jeep will be my primary transportation). It's not gonna be a hardcore rockcrawler or anything...a D44 will suffice.

i have a buddy sellin a 01 or 02 i forget which, 4.0, 4.56's, 35 in bfg m/ts, 8.8 in the rear, sliders, f/r big daddy bumpers, 8000lb warn winch, and a buncha other stuff if you're interested in that i can talk to him ab it for you.

i think the 35 would be ok if you took it easy on the throttle, but i blew mine up w/ a hurtin 4banger, stock gears, open diff, and 33's. if that says anything. maybe it was just my awesome driving skills

that's a little more off-road biased than i really want...i still need this to be a vehicle that i can make 10 hour road trips in

but see what he wants for it and how many miles are on it.

and ask him how many mpg it gets...i'm not looking for a civic hatch, but i don't want something that will totally break the bank with gas bills.
