All the major 2008 GOP candidates are at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference this weekend in Memphis. Hotline is conducting a straw poll to determine who the early favorite is. I'm personally pretty embarassed for McCain. I used to think he was a pretty stand up guy.

^A poll of the people in attendance at any given event. It's not scientific at all, but the media make a big deal out of them.

I like McCain ok but wouldn't vote for the guy. You do realize that he'd be the oldest president ever at the BEGINNING of his term if elected, right? Older than the previous record holder (Reagan) was at the end of his second term.Sorry man, but I'd like to have someone with a better chance of being sentient at the end of 4 years.

Well, to the best knowledge of the "Free Market" the percentages break down thusly for Presidential Nominees:https://www.intrade.com/news/mainpage.jsp?article=news_34.html

We're both wrong. McCain would be older than Reagan when (if) he gets into office (McCain 70, Reagan 69) and would be older than Reagan if he went for two terms. Reagan was 77 when he left office. He's still too old for my liking.
3/11/2006 7:49:23 PM
Reagan was two weeks shy of 70 when he became president.

So voting for old as shit farts is now a good idea?Look - I would have voted for McCain in a heartbeat in 2000, but there's no way in hell that I'm going to vote for a person who has the potential to be the oldest president ever. It's just not a great idea, IMO.Allen or Warner - either way and things are peachy. I'm actually hoping to split up the government a bit with the 2006/08 elections to get some more balance.

What makes him think he has the right to speak up against torture? McCain hates America.

Frist's win isn't that much of a surprise; the SRLC is in Memphis, after all. I think the two surprises are the numbers of Tennesseans (43 percent) that didn't vote for him and Mitt Romney's success overall. I'm a little surprised that Allen didn't best Romney considering his own Southern ties.
3/12/2006 10:45:42 AM
non-TN voters that voted for Frist: 14.2%TN voters that voted for Frist: 57.8%

Frist will NEVER be president. His comment on AIDS will sink him.

Romney will never be president. His name sounding Russian will sink him.

^^ you think America will remember that in 2008?

Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), a renowned heart surgeon before becoming Senate majority leader, went to the floor late Thursday night for the second time in 12 hours to argue that Florida doctors had erred in saying Terri Schiavo is in a "persistent vegetative state.""I question it based on a review of the video footage which I spent an hour or so looking at last night in my office," he said in a lengthy speech in which he quoted medical texts and standards. "She certainly seems to respond to visual stimuli." Stephanopoulos: You’re a doctor. Do you think tears and sweat can transmit HIV”Frist: I don’t know…I can tell you..Stephanopoulos: You don’t know?Frist: I can tell you things like, like..condoms..Stephanopoulos: … You believe that tears and sweat might be able to transmit aids? The AP reported that Frist’s AIDS charity, World of Hope, Inc., “paid nearly a half-million dollars in consulting fees to members of his political inner circle.” Larry Noble of the Center for Responsive Politics said, "One of the things people who are running for president try to do is keep their fundraising staff and political people close at hand. And one of the ways you can do that is by putting them in some sort of organization you run." [AP, 12/18/05]The Securities and Exchange Commission and U.S. Justice Department opened investigations into Frist’s sale of stock in HCA, the health care company founded and managed by the Frist family, just before the stock price plummeted.HE'S A REAL WINNER! All he has to do is shoot a guy in the face.

What do you mean? Bush was being investigated by the SEC right up to his nomination.
