which is better

digital vs. analogHDMI by far..
3/9/2006 11:17:28 PM
HDMI will be most likely be required for the next generation HD content.

Let's just make this thread once a week.
3/10/2006 12:19:42 AM
^^^ On my HDTV, the component cables are plugged in the 'digital component in' jacks, and it has to be because the the HD cable box will not sent visual data out to the 'analog component in' jacks. component can be digital or analog. I know HDMI is better, but to the average users, they probably would see no difference between digital component or HDMI. I have tried them both. I have even seen the difference between $100 and $20 HDMI cables, and there is little difference. It really all depends on the quality of your TV.[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 6:46 AM. Reason : blah]

s video is best by FAR
3/10/2006 8:11:08 AM
come on people.. we all know RF is the best..you will not see digital component in consumer devices in the US. If you do, it is likely mislabeled. From what I've read, YCrCb component is interlace only, so that may be the analog component input of your tv.. and the YPrPb (progressive) the digital input.. Most of the time, the YPrPb inputs are mislabeled as YCrCb inputs. Some have said that true YCrCb is digital, but you will only see that in professional equipment.but HDMI is the newest standard, accepts the copy protection required by most devices today, and is digital all the way from source to TV. It also carries the audio as well.

I noticed a small improvement in PQ going from a good quality set of a component cables to a cheap (computer grade) dvi-d cable on my samsung dlp. There was very slight noise with the component cable that I could only really see with a static image like a paused dvr box that don't show up at all with the dvi.Is there really an improvement in quality between an $8 DVI-D (or HDMI) cable and a $100 cable if the signal is all digital? It seems like you'd need one heck of a source of interferance to change a 0 to a 1 on a digital line
3/12/2006 7:38:51 AM
if you dont see sparklys on your screen, your hdmi dvi cable is doing just fine. save your money and take the sweetheart to dinner
3/12/2006 8:22:12 AM
Default should have just saved his breath
3/12/2006 11:52:12 AM
^Agreed, ive never seen such a false post in all of tech talk(including smoothcrim)
3/12/2006 3:44:39 PM
now that I just actually read Default's post, it makes no sense. Now that I have been using a DVI cable for a few days, I do see that it is better than the component cables I was using. I just had to tweak the picture settings. The contrast between the darker colors was a little different on my tv.
3/12/2006 9:14:32 PM
Wolfrules: you must be kidding right? component is interlace only? yeah that makes sense seeing as my Gamecube's component cables are the ONLY thing that allows me to use Progressive Scan mode in my games.
3/13/2006 3:48:31 PM
^ read my post again.. YCrCb usually, when labeled correctly is interlace only.. YPrPb is interlace/progressive.. you'll see YCrCb on non-HDTVs with component inputs..

HDMI is pretty much the heat. I hope everything will eventually switch over to it, computers included.
3/13/2006 10:25:56 PM
I use DVI for video...pretty sharp picture
3/13/2006 10:59:16 PM
^^ hell yea.. they already are working on HDMI video cards.. of course you'll have to buy an HDMI to DVI converter if you have an older monitor
3/13/2006 11:21:14 PM
Okay, so I just got the TWC HD DVR. I had it running through the component they gave me, which was fine, but I got an HDMI cable since my Xbox uses the component and I don't have a switchbox. With the component, any channel I change to shows up on the screen just fine, HD channels all HDified, regular channels all regular. With the HDMI, when I turn it to a non-HD channel, the picture goes out. I have to switch to the cable input. The little indicator on the front of the box switches to 480i. Is this the way it is? Can HDMI not carry shitty, standard TV images? Or is my TV just shitty for not being able to to that resolution over the HDMI? This is annoying.
3/16/2006 12:19:05 PM
may be your tv. my friend's tv would not accept the hdmi (hdcp according to the twc hd dvr box) output from the twc hd dvr box, so he ended up having to use the component cables that came with the box, and the channels look pretty good (same as spookyjon is describing). is there anyway to get around this?
3/16/2006 12:23:51 PM
I should say, if it wasn't clear in my post, that HD content looks absolutely fine over the HDMI cable. HD shows, live or from DVR, look beautiful over it. It's when you switch to, say, Comedy Central, that the picture goes out and you have to change the inputs.
3/16/2006 12:38:38 PM
must be somethin with your tv. mine is on hdmi and both high def and standard def work fine on the same input
3/16/2006 12:42:04 PM
hey spooky, try this:you know how you can hit the YELLOW "A" button to bring up some quick-settings? well when that comes up, bring up the "Additional Settings" or whatevet its called. then scroll down to something like output formats and deselect 480i. then select 480p and whatever HD format(s) your tv supports (aka 720p or 1080i). some TVs dont support both 720p or 1080i so if you select one and the picture goes black, switch back to a channel that does show up and deselect that particular format.hope this helps?
3/16/2006 12:42:06 PM
has anyone else seen, or dealt with the same problem as i described above?
3/16/2006 12:46:16 PM
Cool, I'll try that out when I get home. It's just weird to me that it can do both formats over component by default and not over HDMI. Of course, even when the cable box is outputting video through HDMI, by default the audio was disabled. So who the fuck knows. Hurray Scientific Atlanta.
3/16/2006 12:46:30 PM
seedless, i think that some of the tvs made when HDMI came out but before the HDCP copy protection was added do not support the HDCP-HDMI that the TWC boxes output. see, originally HDMI was made to integrate DVI with a digital audio stream...the "lets fuck the consumers over because our business model sucks and we like suing people" copy protection bullshit came laterspöokyjon, even if that doesnt fix your problem, your Standard TV will look nicer by deselecting 480i and selecting 480p. progressive is a very nice picture even on SDTV.[Edited on March 16, 2006 at 1:44 PM. 3/16/2006 1:43:03 PM
so you are saying that there is no way to bypass this crap??
3/16/2006 2:26:57 PM
^ i'm saying that i'm not 100% positive what the problem is without seeing it in person. if the TV was made last year or this year it most likely supports HDCP copy protection. if it was made before approximately 2 years ago, then you will have to do a lil' research on it [user manual or product website]. if you are still unsure, link me to the official product page?
3/16/2006 2:35:34 PM
ok, i will look it right now and pm it to you
3/16/2006 2:38:45 PM
Thx b_radd, disabling 480i output fixed it.

So after about two minutes with the HDMI cable, the picture is on again off again for about two seconds at a time. Went to the diagnostic and it said "HDCP Verification Fail" or something stupid like that.OH NOES MY SHITTY TV IS HAX0RING YUOR MEGAHURTS.I fucking hate TWC.
3/17/2006 6:20:33 PM
My component cables certainly won't do this...http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/17/panasonic-viera-link-first-hdmi-universal-remote/
3/18/2006 1:27:48 AM
spooky: yeah i guess you have just found out what many consumer will find out very soon...that the MPAA has just royally fucked you over. you went out and adopted an HDTV thinking you were safe for the future...WRONG (lol). i hate this nonsense soooooooooo much!honestly, i would just use component cables for the time being until you find an "interceptor device". i would link you to it but a) i dont know if they are available yet and b) they arent legal in the US. since HDCP has already been cracked, they make devices which will sit between a device and your TV and tell the device that your TV is good to go.
3/19/2006 2:43:46 AM
So I was looking at this thread on arshttp://tinyurl.com/rhvgpand I read where a guy says this
3/28/2006 8:16:50 AM
probably just his TV. People think that if it's DVI/HDMI/Digital it's automatically gold. There are other factors to consider than just the form factor of the jack. The most important being the signal processing chip that is used to decode the signal coming in from said jack. But those don't have catchy names, so no one cares about them.
3/28/2006 10:52:40 AM
^^implementation of the tv
3/29/2006 10:42:23 AM
^^ i am not listening to nothing you say cause neon brutally owned you in the patent thread
3/29/2006 10:45:11 AM
^umm ok. I count three seperate mistakes in that single sentence
3/29/2006 12:17:40 PM
for the most part, grammar rules don't apply when posting on a message board, also truncation of words happens rather often toohow many mistakes are there
3/29/2006 12:24:04 PM
double negatives definitely count. Also, truncation of words has nothing to do with it.I still count 3
3/29/2006 12:27:17 PM
4 if you count the fact that you addressed me without using "sir"
3/29/2006 12:28:58 PM
all joking aside. The only one that really matters is that I did not, in fact, get owned.check your facts.
3/29/2006 12:31:14 PM
yes sir, you are correct. you did not in fact get owned... it was a case of self-ownage. 1/10 posters would disagree with that.just teasing you man, chill.
3/29/2006 12:34:28 PM
OH I'M CHILLIN'!!!WHY DON'T YOU COME SAY THAT TO MY FACE, THEN WE CAN "CHILL" TOGETHER!!!!!111I'm kidding. I am chillin'. really.
3/29/2006 12:52:56 PM
oh god, someone ressurected this thread?
