Pittsburgh Penguins winger Mark Recchi has waived his no-trade clause in order to be dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes. More to follow.-TSN
3/9/2006 1:37:56 PM
Reportedly the Canes give up a 2nd round draft pick to get him. You may remember Recchi as the guy who scored a hat trick against the Canes no less than 5 days ago.
3/9/2006 1:54:28 PM
a real character guy and he seems to have caught fire at just the right time
3/9/2006 1:56:03 PM
i wonder if he will be like weight or if he'll stay..
3/9/2006 1:57:40 PM
i could be wrong but i do believe he has a team/player option if he opts for another year, he makes 750k if the team opts for it, then it is 2.2 mill. I read about it when he signed it but may have forgotten some details[Edited on March 9, 2006 at 2:06 PM. Reason : fix numbers]
3/9/2006 1:59:38 PM
the deal is now, Kolanos and Nordgren in addition to the 2nd rounder, we won't really miss Kolanos but I will miss Nick
3/9/2006 2:04:29 PM
and the 2nd rounder is said to be in 07
3/9/2006 2:05:05 PM
3/9/2006 2:16:42 PM
we better win the whole damn thing
3/9/2006 3:16:54 PM
if we get tampa in the first round, i am scared
3/9/2006 10:48:48 PM
I'm not really worried about Tampa at all. Now Atlanta, on the other hand...
3/9/2006 10:49:49 PM
you guys are still fuckedno defensive improvementsrecchi is a great offensive forward, but you guys will be fucked playoff timethis is not a step forward because of the loss of cole, this is a stopgapthe area of need was still not addressed
3/9/2006 10:52:34 PM
I am so glad Bob Fuckin McKenzie stopped inwe don't get a "stud number 1 dman" because that is not the style this team plays. We dress 7 dmen every game and get the job done by committee, It is a d corp of chemistry and elbow grease and to trade for a superstar defenseman would undermine the entire concept. Our guys know their jobs, they pinch, they block shots and I couldn't be happier with them. What elite defenseman did Tampa have last year when they won the cup? Dan Boyle? Sydor? About Recchi, He is a great improvement, I am operating under the impression Cole will be back for the playoffs, he is tough as nails and a hockey player and he will be back, Recchi also brings all the intangibles, including cup rings.

when you can score 7 goals, who needs a defense.
3/9/2006 11:23:56 PM
I would love a good goal fest league, but the refs are relaxing the way they call the "new game" add that to the fact that Coaches are smart and they will find a way to trap, Its my belief that the further we get from the rule changes the further we get from a faster paced game. This season has been a drastic improvement over past years, the product has improved, I just hope it stays that way
3/9/2006 11:25:42 PM
^a team that can score 7 goals playing against a team that can score 8?
3/9/2006 11:26:09 PM
Y'know, therooster said everything I needed to say, but I'll add one thing in response to this:
3/9/2006 11:54:22 PM
management thinks we have a good defense alreadyi dont know why. but they do. when it comes playoff time, if we dont make it far, it will be clear wtf happened.
3/9/2006 11:57:40 PM
maybe I have been too busy watching the games, but when did our defense become such a liability? maybe you can help me with this, vinylbandit
3/10/2006 12:02:24 AM
Our team scores a lot of goals. Not '80s Oilers a lot of goals, but plenty.Even so, you're a moron if you ignore that ALL of our regular defensemen (the top seven, naturally) are +2 or above. Hutchinson is -2, but he's an offensive/PP type who won't play a lot in the playoffs to begin with. Babchuk is -4, but that includes his time with Chicago, a club with no team defense and no goaltending. Before someone argues the opposite point, that even our best +/- defender is Hedican at +12, it's important to pay attention to the fact that this is a defend-by-committee team with a significant number of skilled defensive forwards (and a bonafide Selke candidate).[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 12:17 AM. Is Jack Johnson gonna sign once the Michigan season is over?
3/10/2006 12:24:03 AM
do the names DETROIT REDWINGS or OTTAWA SENATORS or NEW YORK RANGERS mean anything to youyes those are all teams that will outscore your team 2/3 of the time when playedOMG A GUY WHO HAS 0 NHL EXPERIENCE IS OUR SAVIOR .[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 12:31 AM. Reason : /]
3/10/2006 12:24:26 AM
I suppose... Even though the Canes have a record of 5-3 against Ottawa, Detroit, and the Rangers this season...

I never said Jack Johnson was a savior. You said the Canes made no defensive acquisitions, and they haven't...but they will.As for NHL experience, who cares? Dion Phaneuf had no NHL experience. There's no way to tell until he straps on his skates in the show.I am a firm believer in the fact that this team can continue to be successful in defending by committee because of the top-to-bottom strength of the seven defensemen who are playing every night and the strength of goaltending.Yes, there are lapses from time to time, but as a general rule they happen as a function of a team letdown in energy/focus/whatever (see the three instances of too few men on the ice in one ten minute span last week). I cannot think of a big name defenseman that I would be willing to sacrifice a major offensive component for. A destruction type d-man would be nice, but with one of somewhat unknown major league upside in the wings, I see no need to deal for one.On top of that, there's no reason to think that a big name d-man would solve this perceived "problem". Chara hasn't pushed Ottawa to any new heights, while the aforementioned Cup-winning Lightning had no A1 d-man.

look at the lightning's run through the playoffsthey luckily matched up very well against every team they had to playI just dont believe the canse can win more than 1 series with the team they have now, not to mention this year they have for the most part lacked the defensive intensity to make a playoff run. You can use the lightning as an example, but i can use the Devils, Red Wings, and Stars from previous years as my examples.ps i suggested jackman from stl
3/10/2006 12:47:52 AM
^^ aha the #1 team in hockeyahathey media sources have one thing you dont, knowledgethe way the canes are built, they all know they wont last long in the playoffsit was the same way for the 1995-1996 red wings[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 12:53 AM. Reason : .]

i have watched a lot of their gamesmebbe its because im used to watching the red wings, who lose key players every season and still play solid D and usually make a nice playoff run
3/10/2006 1:12:15 AM
what was great was when the canes played they wings in the stanley cupcanes fans were claiming that raleigh was the "real hockeytown usa" ahahahahathe next season they suck ass and no one goes to the gamesahahahahahaahahahaha[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 1:15 AM. Reason : .]

I'll be very interested to see how the Wings fare in net once the playoffs roll around. Last season, Legace crumbled under the pressure, and Osgood doesn't have the goods to carry a team any more, even a team as good as the Wings. As for the fans, no one in TWW Sports Talk should be surprised at the dramatic bandwagon effect, especially with a sport like hockey that at best has a niche appreciation for its instrinsic qualities in this community. I don't think anyone who knew the real scoop (aside from the TV guys with their friendly homerism) was claiming the "Real Hockeytown" garbage.[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 1:21 AM. Reason : d]

^ i disagree, you are referring to the rangers about buying and spending sirI mean detroit will acquire players at the deadline like any other team, but who was their last huge free agent signing? Not Lang, not Schneider. A lot of their talent is home grown and they just retain the valuable players that they get at the trading deadlinesdetroit doesnt overpay players, players just want to play for them, so if lets say edmonton offers the same contract as detroit, which would u choose as a player?
3/10/2006 6:47:36 AM
no experience? I guess brindy, weight, and now recchi are all rookies?I'm very impressed with our D, we don't usually give up 2nd chance shots. There's a reason we're number 1 in the NHL..we have a fuckin good team. A team that "could" win the cup.
3/10/2006 7:58:19 AM
we have a goaltender that has proven he can stand on his head in tournament play, I honestly like our chances and will be the last person to call this team a Cinderella. I am comfortable with our defense and so is the front office, you know, the guys with real "hockey knowledge". This is a new style of play that will win the cup for many teams just like the Trap caught on in the 90's
3/10/2006 8:34:39 AM
3/10/2006 8:41:31 AM
man, this sounds like an argument between 5 year oldsthe Canes have as good a shot as any, but no one can be sure since it is the NHL playoffs and there is always uncertainty with that
