My neighbors and I want to have a block party on our culdesac and I want to get a permit or something to close down the street. I found a form on City of Raleigh's websitehttp://www.raleigh-nc.org/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_98797_0_0_18/Street_Closing_Petition.pdf
I think that is for closing a street down permanently, so does anyone know how to go about this or if there is a permit I can get for this?

yeah i actually got a ticket for a few months ago,and that was only becuse it was causing a problem with parked cars and traffic. But if a business can close down a street, like the lincoln theater does, why can't we if everyone on the culdesac agrees? once we can legally throw a party in the street the only problem would be parking because no one is going to complain about noise.

Someone is apparently too young to remember Brent Road.

First question: What is your time frame for getting this done?
Second question: Is there Alcohol involved with this?
Third question: What does your homeowner's association say about stuff like this?

you're comparing businesses (that the city of raleigh cares for) to a student party (that the city of raleigh despises)

i'm with everyone else. good luck with this one.

Dear ALE/RPD,

Please Come Find My Party and Shut it Down! If you needed to find the address, I filed for a permit.

actually, my fraternity got our street closed for a charity concert we held a couple of years ago. if i remember correctly, some of hte things you will have to do is get something like a petition signed by all of your neighbors saying that they're cool with you throwing the party. also, it helps that you're in a cul-de-sac, as opposed to a hire traffic road. i believe that you will also have to higher off-duty officer(s) as well. make sure you have a pretty good reason for wanting to close the street. don't just say "we want to throw a large party". be more professional about it.

oh yeah, and you'll more than likely have to shut down the party once the npo starts kicking in (10:30pm i think). we held our event during the day, and a had a after-party in the house once our permit expired

NPO can be upheald, but if a street is closed for an event, they will not shut down the event for blokcing the street. I beleive his last party was shut down due to obstruction the street.

my mom's neighborhood closes down her street with a culdesac and does a big charity lobster thing every year. they are in north raleigh though, and old. probably a much different process for them.

Even if you get the required permits the street is still public property and the cops can wander around your party "investigating" whatever they want. You may be exposing yourself to more liability than you want if your the one holding the event, particularly if you are selling alcohol. If you do end up having the event in your cul-de-sac and can get your neighbors on board it would probably be wise to do everything BYOB so you can minimize your exposure to any alcohol violations.

The city will probably dictate what time the event has to end on your permit. I would imagine having the permit on hand and being within the time permitted would preclude a cop from charging you with a nuisance party violation.
