A friend of mine is going back to NCSU in the fall but doesn't have a TRACS login yet. Is there any way to find out the list of courses he'll have to take to get his degree?

well, he may enter back into his old degree key. tell him to e-mail me mailto:nicole_harrell@ncsu.edu

i can check to see which degree key he would fall into and then he can compare (possibly work with wolfeee) it to his transcript to see what all would be needed for him to complete the degree he started.

if he is interested in something else, tell him to put that in the e-mail as well.

Some colleges ask that students returning after 12 months be subject to new degree keys if there have been any changes in the interim. Unless, it can be shown it is a significant hardship to go new vs. old. Management is one. Even if your college allows you to reenter under your former degree requirements, new may be shorter, or better. Degrees change to keep up with market and academic demands for remaining current in the field. Firegrl sounds like she is glad to help you get started. Let me know if your friend needs to compare his credits under mulitple degree keys.

^ Let me add that the reason colleges may ask students who have been away more than a year to follow new degree requirements is this: the academic field keeps moving. The courses it took several years ago to make a student competitive and EDUCATED in the field may not be the same ones it takes to meet that same objective now. Sure, there will be some courses that remain fairly constant, but others will change.

When a student enters in college, the degree requirements in the catalog are like a contract. If a student leaves for a significant period of time, there is a break in the contract. And while no one, no college, wants to put a student through the hardship of taking many more courses to finish a degree, neither do they want to do a disservice by allowing him/her to finish an old degree that does not put the student in the best educated position to succeed upon graduation.

Personally, I agree with the practice.
