anyone know of any garage space around that can accomodate a fairly large working area (at least 15'x25') with accomodations that are permissible to spray paint/gelcoat?I know that most storage area places don't allow spraying because the walls are not built to the cieling and overspray could get on other peoples' shit.

That's a damn good question, and I would like to know the answer to that as well.I'm doing a temporary fix...building a temp shelter out of EMT conduit to paint my Teg parts in, but it's not gonna be nearly that big. Only 10x10. A bigger one will be in the works...big enough to paint my truck in, and that will be about that size. Cost stands in the way right now, though. I just don't have enough money to do all this shit. I don't have enough time either...

I still prefer to use a spray gun. You can apply all the paint in a couple of hours or less. Not as much shit work.

Have you got a gelcoat gun? It would be nice to find a place to rent, maybe go in with a coupla fuckers. I could really use a good place to paint. Big deal is this: money.

HVLP gun can spray gelcoat.I haven't been to james' "New" place but I'm sure he's got the 55 all up in there and no place for a full scale boat hull jig/mold/plug operation to go on in there.

Are you using UV cure Gelcoat or something? you mixing catalyst in with it before spraying? You not worried about it "kicking" and leaving you with an HVLP paperweight?I am just curious because I'm thinking this might be a good thing to try if it actually performs decently.

you mix in PVA with the gelcoat to "thin it out" while spraying.then when you're done with spraying, pure PVA goes through the gun to clean it out.
2/25/2006 9:05:17 AM
Yeah, but PVA dries to a nice green film, doesn't it?And I thought PVA was what you used as a mold parting agent. I didn't realize that it would mix with gelcoat resin (or any other resin for that matter). Are you using regular polyester gelcoat or vinylester or what?I'm serious; this piques the fuck outta my curiosity.
