depends on what type of pet you have

Hey, I worked there for a year in the kennel. Very expensive but where I still take my personal animals because I know they are in the best hands. Each Vet specializes in something different. They are very thorough and play close attention to detail. Dr. Bowman is awesome but focuses mainly on Eastern Medicine and would suggest treatment with herbs, acupuncture, moxa, etc - which are very high dollar. Only thing that I do NOT like is that she breeds maine coons. I take my Zoe(dog) to Dr. Smith and my Marley(cat) to Dr. Goetz. I can also recommend Dr. Bigsby who has seen my Cali (long term foster with cancer) and Dr. D.

does she show the maine coons? that seems to be a theme with a lot of the higher dollar vets is that they breed some sort of domestic animal. but i would rather a vet breed an animal than billy bob down the street. I am going there next week to talk to Dr. Bowman about my dog's allergies. I friend of mine said that one of her friends has a golden who has allergy issues and that hollistic methods helped tremendously! I have never been big on the whole hollistic medicine but i am willing to try it. The receptionist was very knowledgable and friendly which doesn't happen much!
2/22/2006 7:21:13 PM
hey, i may not be knowledgable, but I'm damn friendly! and if you aren't gonna go to Mayfair, I've heard good things about Bowman
2/22/2006 7:25:03 PM
i have heard a lot of good things about Mayfair, but they don't do the holistic stuff.
2/22/2006 7:28:56 PM
Brooks is a cool dude.
2/22/2006 7:29:08 PM
I think hollistic is only a good alternative if you've tried everything else. And why on earth would a vet breeding maine coons be a problem for you?
2/22/2006 9:35:58 PM
Dr. Bowman is bat shit crazy and irresponsible. Go elsewhere if you value money and your pets health.
2/22/2006 9:46:17 PM
^See that's atleast more of a legitimate reason to dislike a vet. Though it'd be nice to know why.

b/c vets should know that there are too many animals that die in shelters and not to bring more into the world. unless they are show quality and she has strict rules on who gets the kittens and she takes all the cats back if the new home doesn't work out. It is hard for people to understand this concept if they don't understand how many animals die a year b/c people want to breed everything with "working parts". the vets i know that breed or used to breed had champion show animals and bred selectively and just as selective when choosing who would buy their animals. These means that they care about the breed not the dollar! Very important!msb2ncsu: can you give more details? you can send me a pm if necessary.

oh yeah, i forgot to say. she has had allergies problems since i got her 2 years ago. She is on an allergy diet and takes benedryl when it gets really bad (sometimes three times a day). i have done the whole steroid thing, but i don't want her on steroids long term.
2/22/2006 10:23:52 PM
^^^Ohhh, sorry, man, I forgot that you were one of THOSE pet people. How do you know the vet doesn't breed quality animals? Or only breeds them when there's a demand? Or are you just assuming they breed subpar animals rampantly?[Edited on February 22, 2006 at 10:28 PM. Reason : meh]

Dr Bowman does breed/show Maine Coons... she has used a good chunk of the cat ward for housing hers and the cats of prominent friends in the circuit. Let me clarify too, I just don't like Dr. Bowman... the other doctors, like Goetz and Bigsby, are great. Its just gonna cost you a little more at Bowman AH because of the size of the practice.Dr Connie Jones recently left Bowman and started her own practice in Wake Forest (probably too far for anyone here though). She's awesome.http://www.heritagevets.com/

I have taken my cat there once, Wasn't too expensive and the vet was really nice. Good experience.

Look, homeopathy is simply fucking quackery. If your mother doesn't have the critical thinking skills to distinguish between that kind of fluff and good science, she IS batshit crazy and irresponsible.OH LET ME TREAT YOUR DOGGIEHEREHAVE HIM TAKE THIS DILUTION OF BEE POLLENONE PART PER SIXTEEN BILLIONTHE POLLEN'S MAGICAL HEALING PROPERTIES WILL FIND SYNERGY IN THE RESONANT STRUCTURE OF THE WATER MAGICULESetc.

although my hospital does not practice it, it isn't quackery. You can choose to not believe in it, but some people have honest faith in it. People have the right to choose whether or not to use it on their dogs or themselves, she isn't tricking people, she is expressing her faith in it. I doubt she can legally treat a dog with something without some scientific findings on it either.[Edited on February 24, 2006 at 4:39 PM. Reason : thing]

MEDICINE IS NOT ABOUT FUCKING FAITH. IT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU "CHOOSE TO BELIEVE IN."

homeopathy is an example of a little bit of information being misused and misunderstoodhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormesis

by the way, i'm backing up the doctor's choices, not endorsing homepathic remedies...I'm not a huge fan myself. My grandmother is always making me take strange crap like bee pollen and the like...

this thread reminds me ofI know some people think holistic medicines only effect is the placebo effect, but I think it would be hard to see that in animals whose psychological set up wouldn’t be complex enough to process it all.I think holistic medicine can work, but to a lesser extent than regular medicine. If rubbing a particular herb on your skin or eating it or whatever can help you in holistic medicine, then extracting that chemical compound and getting a direct injection where you need it in normal medical practices seems more effective.I think holistic should only be turned to after regular treatments fail, incase they happen to have come across something that “real medicine” hasn’t yet.I could see the potential for an extreme placebo effect on the pet owners though who have a lot emotionally invested in seeing holistic treatments do some good or cause some level of improvement on their beloved animals.
2/24/2006 4:44:14 PM
we have a lot of owners who "think" fluffy is limping or something of the like, and nothing is wrong with the pet, so pet owners may think they see results, when in fact nothing has changed
2/24/2006 4:46:12 PM
If you think our lawmakers give a very detailed damn about how animals are treated, you're mistaken. They're not going to legislate against homeopathy because it's just fucking water, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous or irresponsible to promote it as being an effective treatment for serious conditions—it's just that soft-touch pet owners with no fuckin' brains don't question that woo-woo shit.[Edited on February 24, 2006 at 4:51 PM. Not that people on heres opinion matter.... but Dr. Bowman is a great woman and an awesome Vet! Her credentials are overwhelming! I have personally seen recovery from the following of her treatments (although I was only working in the kennel for a year and I know there are tons more stories). Cat scratch on pugs eye healed with lazer beams. Many ailments recovered with acupunture. Dr. Bowman obviously statigically places the neeedles but a few times I sat with dogs and waited for them to fall out. Heard and saw great success with accupuncture. Also saw her healing with moxa treatments. Bottom line is... if I have have a personal dog with an untreatable illness I will go to Dr. Bowman. It is like she works magic- and please don't crack it until you try it (*see it). I foster a lot of animals and some have medical problems but of course they are fosters and I do not have the bank roll to treat a cancer patient (although she is being given great care). Please this is a great practice. As I have stated before it is expensive but you are receiving the best care. I use to work there & obviously get a discount... now that I have moved on I still take my personal pets there and pay full price. I always will as long as I live in Raleigh. I love everyone that works there & you can be assured you will recieve the best care! Miss ya Brooks!
