Is there any way to play an old xbox game on a xbox 360 without the harddrive? Why does it need to have a harddrive just to play the game? Do you have to have the 360 harddrive or can I use another one that I have?

it needs one because the systems uses an entirely new main processor and gpu. xbox games run under emulation and only certain ones are supported. you need the drive so u can run the emulation software. i havent looked at the connections but my guess is you have to use their drive.

All you need to have is ANY official Xbox 360 memory storage device - a memory card will do.

Mem cards will not work. You have to have the 360 HD because the backwards compatible games are emulated. Not all games are backwards compatible, there is a list of which ones are on the xbox site. Since it is software emulated, other old original xbox games may become capatible as MS releases updates (like they did for some of the splinter cell games).
