a friend of mine needed some cash tonight, he had a couple paychecks but couldn't get them cashed so I gave him the cash for one of the checks. I don't know how this works but he said that as long as he signed it I should have no problem depositing the check. I haven't deposited a check in person in over a year but I know they never checked my ID when depositing a check but i would assume it didn't matter because the name on the account and the name on the check matches. Given that the names don't match, will this work? If not what do I need him to put on the check? I could also just get him to write me a personal check and wait for him to deposit these checks, but i'd rather just go deposit this tomorrow. How does this work?

most banks require both people to be there to sign over a check

when i worked at a bank both people had to be there, i pretty much had to witness the person sign over the check and document both IDs on the back...also i had to make sure you had sufficient funds to cover the check should it be bad....You probably don't know your teller seeing as thought you havent been in there in a year..so im thinking you are pretty much screwed...

you can deposit any check that is endorsed on the back

if you have a blank endorsement (that's what it's called when they just sign it) and you are depositing it and NOT cashing it, then they will be able to do it no problem - they might verify your id, but i seriously doubt it

My mother has signed over checks to me and there was no problem. She signed the back of the check that was made out to her, then I signed under her name, then I filled out the deposit slip, and deposited the check to my account. no problem. she didn't have to be there and no one asked any questions.[Edited on February 20, 2006 at 9:39 PM. I thought a blank endorsement meant that anyone would be able to deposit it to the person-the-check-is-made-out-to's account. I would think it would be far too easy to deposit someone else's paycheck if not. Kind of defeats the purpose of the "Pay to the order of" line on the front if not.

That's why you're not supposed to endorse a check until you get to the bank. I've deposited checks to my account made out to other people a number of times due to rebates, people owing me money, and tobacco business. Never had a single question asked. They just had to endorse the check before handing it over to me.

you will have no problem depositing the check if it is endorsed

Depends on the bank. My mom's bank almost didn't deposit a check with my name on it into her account even though I had signed it, and that was under $50. Try it, but it probably depends on the bank and the teller you get.

well worst case is they say no, so i call him and he comes to the bank and deposits the check for me. I just wanted to know before I walked in there. Thanks for the help.

Don't know if this counts, but when I worked at Dannys BBQ a while ago he would always cash my checks for me there (since we got paid on saturday's) and I would just sign it over to him. Also, have done this with my parents tons of times but not sure if it's different since it's family.
