Do you have to have insurance for your NCDL to be valid?Backstory:I donated my car to charity a few weeks ago, and naturally cancelled my insurance. I'm looking to rent a car for the weekend, but I was just told by a friend that my license is probably suspended now that I don't have insurance. Also, would it make any difference if I live in VA, but I still have an NCDL?I couldn't find anything at dmv.org.

If you are under 25 the only way you can rent a car at any rental car company is if you have a major credit card (NOT a debit card) thats not tied to you bank account. Even then, you'll be hard pressed to find a rental car company outside of Enterprise that will rent you a car. The majority of companies will simply not rent to you until 25 or up.We rent to folks all the time with an NCDL and no insurance. The legality of that DL, I dunno. If you were over 25, we wouldn't even require the credit card. But being under 25 you are required to have: 1) Full coverage insurance in your name that will transfer or 2)A plain credit card not tied to a bank account.[Edited on February 20, 2006 at 7:37 PM. i dont think you need to have insurance to have DL; however you have to have it to register/tag a car. i'd think you'd want it if you were to be doing any driving at all, just to be on the safe side.
